Fujifilm X-E4 and GFX100S Get Likely Release Dates Thanks to Official Event
The highly anticipated Fujifilm X-E4 and Fujifilm GFX100S have been given probable release dates thanks to an official event announcement. Fujifilm's global X Summit event, which normally sees the arrival of new cameras and lenses, will kick off on January 27 at 8am EST / 1pm GMT, or midnight AEST on January 28. Fujifilm hasn't given us any further details on what exactly will be announced, but a series of generally reliable Fuji rumor leaks suggests that it will be a one-off event that will see the unveiling of these two cameras, plus three lenses. Fuji knows how to cheer up camera fans in January. So what exactly can we expect from these two new cameras? The Fujifilm X-E4 is expected to be the more versatile successor to 3's compact mid-range Fujifilm X-E2017. Looking for a small, stylish camera with superior smartphone image quality and the flexibility of interchangeable lenses? It's likely to work, thanks to the supposed addition of a new tilting screen and weather protection. Meanwhile, the Fujifilm GFX100S is expected to be the medium format successor to the Fujifilm GFX100 102MP. If you're unfamiliar with medium format cameras, they have huge sensors that are 67% larger than their full-frame rivals and were previously so large they were usually confined to the studio. However, the GFX100S will apparently be even smaller than the Fujifilm GFX50S, which is a relatively 'compact' camera given its sensor. The latter still weighs 920g, but that means the incoming GFX100S might be small enough to fit into a relatively small shoulder bag.

A welcome boost

The arrival of the two cameras would be a welcome boost for photography fans and the camera world in general, which is being reflected in the official cost of the pandemic after 2020 sales figures emerge, Fujifilm revealed in In a recent statement announcing the restructuring of his new company that global demand for digital cameras has fallen 40% since the beginning of April 2020, according to CIPA. Oh. But since then, there have been signs of recovery and it's a wave that the Fujifilm X-E4 and GFX100S, if they are indeed announced at X Summit, will be looking to ride. Another bonus for fans of the X series (which have APS-C sensors) and the GFX series (medium format sensors) is that new lenses for both systems are also expected to be announced at X Summit. For the X-series, Fuji Rumors reckons we'll see a new crepe Fujifilm XF27mm f/2.8 Mk II lens arrive, likely to be an affordable companion to the X-E4. More exciting is the Fujifilm XF70-300mm f/4-f/5.6, which should provide a lightweight, weatherproof zoom option that will work well for other recent arrivals like the XF10-24mm f/4 Mk II. If you're more interested in the GFX system, the promising news is that we're also expecting our first look at the Fujifilm GF80mm f/1.7 lens. This lens is understandably not cheap, but it could provide well-heeled bokeh fans with a gloriously bright prime lens. If all this excites you, mark January 27 on your calendar; we'll bring you all the official news as soon as it airs.
