Go ahead, Marvel franchise: Malayalam superhero movie Minnal Murali gets sequel

With Minnal Murali, the Malayalam film starring Tovino Thomas, the Indian superhero film has arrived. Or so it seems. Because there is going to be a sequel. After all, from Hollywood experience, we know that no superhero is a superhero unless his movie jumps on the franchise bandwagon.

Minnal Murali, which has been streaming on Netflix since last Friday, has garnered an amazing response from fans and critics alike. And the last we hear is that the producers have a plan for a sequel. And that too, in 3D.

In an interview with an online news site, the film's producer Sophia Paul said: “We will announce the sequel soon, a great show. Like I said, I can't speak to what we have in mind, but it's going to be one hell of a stunt."

A superhero rooted in local ethics

While it's unclear when the sequel will be released, it's clear from the producer's comments that it would also be directed by Basil Joseph, who directed the current version. When asked if Shibu (played by Guru Somasundaram) would be there as an antagonist, the producer replied, "I can't say if Shibu is there or not right now. All my team, led by Basil Joseph, will be there to execute our plans. As I said, we have bigger things on our minds, having received a red carpet welcome now. This is the license the public has given us to take the franchise to the next level."

Indeed, it is a fact that Minnal Murali has sparked the imagination of fans who were dreaming of an Indian superhero. Certainly, there have been Indian superhero movies in the past. Like the late '80s hit on Mr. India, whose soul lies in the concept of superheroes. But alas, superheroes need to have a look and feel. Mr. India was almost invisible.

But what happens, says Krrish? Well, it was a superhero movie. But his sensibilities were not Indian.

Minnal Murali, on the other hand, is quite grounded and its vibe and fervor is decidedly local. A superhero who doesn't throw away his rubber slippers and his veshti. And that is the strength of the film. Such a superhero deserves an expansion in the form of a sequel.

For his part, the film's lead actor Tovino Thomas also said: "We have an interesting idea ready, which Basil shared with me during the shoot. So let's see how it goes."

Except that Minnal Murali 2, if and when it comes, will probably be in theaters. The OTT version will take time. Apparently, there are some things that even superheroes can't win: the business side of movies in India, for example.
