Fortnite finally returns to iOS… sort of

Fortnite will once again be playable on Apple hardware thanks to a new collaboration between Epic Games and Nvidia GeForce Now.

After the popular battle royale title launched on iOS devices in August 2020 and was permanently blacklisted in September of last year following the legal dispute between Epic and Apple, it seemed like iPhone and iPad gamers might never return. to Fortnite.

This is no longer the case, as Nvidia has announced a closed beta that will allow GeForce Now members to stream the game to their smartphones via the iOS Safari browser or the GeForce Now app for Android.

And to make it feel like a true throwback to iOS devices, the beta will allow players to use Fortnite mobile touch controls, though you can also use a gamepad for a more optimal experience.

The beta version is open for registration and selected participants will be able to access it later this month. The best news, though, is that according to Nvidia's press release, "a paid GeForce Now subscription is not required to participate."

Free members, however, can only access streaming performance that mimics a basic platform and can only play sessions that last up to an hour before kicking off and being forced to join the queue. For $9.99 / £8.99 / AU$19.99 per month, gamers can upgrade to the Priority subscription for six-hour sessions and servers capable of handling 1080p at 60FPS.

For $99.99 / $89.99 for six months, you can access the RTX 3080 tier for eight-hour sessions and servers that mimic gaming rigs that use an RTX 3080 GPU.

Paid tiers get priority when accessing the servers for regular use, but it's unclear if they'll also get priority when Nvidia chooses which players to add to the closed beta. We contacted Nvidia to clarify this.

Even if it's not successfully added to beta right away, don't lose hope: Nvidia said batches of new players will be added in the coming weeks as it tests server uploads.
