My main role at LPR is as a jockey and rigger, a job where I take care of my four horses in the mornings, as well as being the ground keeper for one of the jockeys. Most days I start at 5am, they each have four designated stallions/horses they are responsible for, so every morning I empty the stalls, feed my horses fresh alfalfa hay, clean out their trough and attach them if necessary. Working with these horses on a daily basis is a very enriching experience. At 5:45 a.m. m. the pits are made and by then everyone is at the work table to see who their jockey is and what horses they are working on. As a groom, my job is to tie up my jockey's horses, wash them after work, then put them in the walker or put them back in their crate (depending on the job), and either get the next two horses or take them to the track for a cross. . During this time, I can also help other guards or my foreman. The number of horses you work with depends on each day, but you can work with as few as four or as many as nine. At 8:45 or 9:00 a.m. m., when all the horses are gone, we start doing our job, mine is to hand wash all the bridles with disinfectant and clean the sawdust/straw piles in each corridor of the leaf blowers. Once these tasks are completed, I return to my four stalls where I check all my horses for swelling, cuts, lameness, and whether or not they are missing a shoe, and report any issues to my foreman. If my horses are up for it, he'll give them a few hugs and scratches too. When I got to LPR, I literally took off with a bang. I received a lot of information and a lot of people taught me how to count, each one with a different style of how to do it. I had to learn fast and absorb everything like a sponge. But the hardest and most frustrating thing at first was finding a method that worked for me. Everyone did things differently and trying to adopt their methods often didn't work, and I had to personally adapt to my work and environment to find that "light bulb moment", which took me a few weeks to find. Once I did, everything fell into place and my work became more enjoyable and doable. Not only did I learn a lot about running and running a racing stable, but I also learned a lot more about the biomechanics of racehorses and the importance and frequency of a veterinarian's job. The career I want in this industry is to be an equine veterinarian. But probably the most important thing I've learned throughout this experience is how determined I can be when I really put my mind to it. Throughout high school, I always had this drive to do well and stay on top of my schoolwork, but since I've worked at LPR, that's sped up a bit. Every day I go to work, no matter what happened the day before or the week before, with determination and the will to make a good impression on my co-workers and foremen. Even in the times when I am left behind with my horses for my rider, I always go the extra mile to make sure the job is done. Another one of my highlights was also the strapping for training and racing. My first race as a strapper was at Ballarat Turf Club, where I finished 12th and third. But for me, the best moment was when I was able to tie up one of my designated horses, 'Almighty Will', on his second attempt at this build, where he won. For me, this side of the work is really nice because it reminds me to have an event-like atmosphere. This internship was a very rewarding experience for me and it opened my eyes to a whole new side of the racing industry that you cannot understand unless you are part of it. Around this time last year, No Song No Supper was lining up to compete in his third annual Grand Steeplechase, a race he won in 2016 and was runner-up the year before. In each of the three years heading to "The Bool" for the iconic Warrnambool May Racing Carnival, Supper had a special companion, his freighter, Kym Hobby. Hobby is always at his side to meet all the needs of the gelding and to campaign as a participant in full events. Hobby's association with 'Supper' began five years ago, when the young stable worker met the handsome bay six-year-old. "I started my journey with No Song No Supper in 2013 when I started working for his trainer Patrick Payne. Bronte has been riding since the age of three and has followed his love of horses into a successful career at the heart of the industry. Tell us a bit about yourself, how did you get started in the racing industry? I have been around horses for most of my life and started riding at the age of three and joined the pony club soon after. From there I followed my love of horses to a job that involved training endurance horses and then decided to go on to work in the racing industry for Adam Trinder and Leah Goodrick. Adam and Leah have been great mentors to me over the years that I have worked for them, which is why I have found a true passion for the racing industry and the opportunities that come with it. What do you like most about your job? I love seeing these horses go from yearlings to athletes. This transformation requires a lot of work and patience. During this time you can form great bonds and relationships with these horses and gain a lot of insight from the people you work with. How long have you been the strapper for Mystic Journey? Was it the first time you traveled with her to the mainland? I worked with Mystic Journey after she came out of the waves to be trained by Adam. Throughout that time, I've had the opportunity to ride her work on the track and have tied her in six of her nine starts. I have always loved horses from a very young age and have always bred them. My passion was working in the industry and I started my first job in racing when I was 15, part time, as well as finishing school and went on from there. There is nothing else I can see myself doing now. What do you like most about horses? What I like most about them is that they have that way of connecting with you that few animals have. My horses that I take care of at work are not just horses, they are much more special to me, almost like having children. Every morning I wake up excited to ride them to see them and when race day comes and they go out of their way for you, that's the most rewarding thing of all. Day after day we take care of these horses, when they win and run well you are proud to be part of them. What is a typical day like for you? What are some of your responsibilities? I'm Tony McEvoy's traveling foreman, which means when the horses go down the road, I go with them. It is my responsibility to make sure everything Tony asks is done and that these horses are 100% ready for the races we are headed to. I do athletics, tie horses and also go to races and saddle when necessary. Honestly, it's a dream job. When I go back to Melbourne, I always do the same thing. How did you come to work for Tony McEvoy, how long have you worked there? I've always had great respect for Tony McEvoy because early on I worked on some year-long preparations and he was always one of the nicest and nicest coaches we'd go to. He took the time to talk to everyone. I was looking for a change from my previous team three years ago and McEvoy Mitchell Racing was looking for track drivers at the time, it's the best career decision I've ever made and also the most rewarding. I feel very lucky to not only work for a great coach, but also for such a lovely human being. How special is it to work with a horse like Sunlight? But other than that, it's just to make sure when I travel that the horses are healthy and fit and that Tony is happy with them. Tony is nice to work for because as long as you do your best and know how he likes things, he will rarely be unhappy with the work you do. What is your favorite part of being a strapper?
