Epic Games Sees Growth Potential in Indian Gaming Market

The gaming market in India has the potential to grow in the coming years, thanks to cheaper bandwidth and the availability of smartphones in various price ranges. However, most of this growth continues in the mobile space, as game console prices are out of reach for most casual gamers. Indian software trade organization NASSCOM claims that the mobile gaming market would reach 628 million users and could be worth more than $2020 billion during the 21-XNUMX period. It stood at just €290 million in 2016 and represents solid growth over four years. The country also recorded the highest number of game downloads with 2.800 billion in the first half of 2018. The growing number of players was quite evident to Epic Games as they witnessed a large number of connections from India for Fortnite, which can be easily downloaded on iOS and Android. The game is now considered the bestseller with over 350 million registered players and has generated over €2.4 billion in revenue for the company. India is already in the top five in the world of mobile gaming and is in the top three with total value also expected to increase significantly. A 2018 Cint survey found that a quarter of respondents spent between one and three hours a week playing video games. And among them, 35% were women who played five times a week. Most of the gamers were in the 18-24 age group and their favorite game was PUBG, which was later estimated to generate €7 million in revenue every month in India. Today that number is significantly higher, as Covid-19 forced people indoors for nearly two months. Quentin Staes-Polet, general manager of Epic Games with responsibility for India and Southeast Asia, believes that the gaming market is still nascent with the developer community, but it hasn't yet. discovered the behavior of game enthusiasts in this part of the world. Staes-Polet said in a conversation with The Indian Express that the Indian gaming market has shown signs of strong growth since bandwidth became cheap and easily accessible to a wider audience. "This is something that has radically transformed the market in a very short time," he says. However, there are several challenges. For starters, global game developers don't really listen to the behavior of Indian gamers. As the head of Epic Games says, the peculiarities of the region are what make it interesting and stimulating. But, if they focus on a high-quality gaming experience, India has a low average revenue per paid user among global markets. A Newzoo market research report said late last year that the APAC region had generated 47% of total revenue for game developers in 2019 and that number is expected to rise in the coming years. A Chennai-based game developer says it's a good time for companies to come together, because before long, the best in the industry would become a benchmark for Indian gamers.
