Electric cars in crisis when the Porsche Taycan surpasses the iconic 911

The all-electric Taycan sold more than 41.000 units last year, putting it ahead of the legendary 911 and third only to the brand's two SUV models.

Year-end 2021 sales figures from major automakers have tanked and Porsche, in particular, has reason to brag as its new vehicle has become a major bestseller.

The Taycan was just part of a great 2021 for Porsche. The brand's overall sales set records, with 301.915 units sold worldwide. Sales in the United States were equally strong, as more than 70.000 vehicles sold set another sales record.

Sales of the Porsche Taycan more than doubled from the previous year. New models such as the Taycan GTS and Taycan GTS Sport Turismo have increased interest in the vehicle, which has a starting price of almost €83,000 / €73,000.

At the top of the Taycan range, the Turbo S starts at €185,000 / €139,280 and the Turbo S Cross Turismo starts at €187,600 / €140,360.

The Taycan is far from cheap, but it's a bit cheaper than the 911 while still giving you a few extra doors and two proper rear seats, making it more practical for everyday use.

Surprised?

That the Taycan outsold the 911 isn't all that surprising, as the electrified newcomer already outsold the iconic 911 in quarterly sales figures.

It's also no surprise that Porsche's most popular vehicles are its SUVs, led by the compact Macan, which has sold almost 90.000 units worldwide. The Cayenne reached just over 83.000 units, more than double the Taycan's impressive sales figures.

Porsche buyers and newcomers alike flocked to the Taycan for its astonishing performance and eye-catching design. Anecdotally, it's easy to find stories of hopeful 911 buyers turning to the Taycan after having trouble ordering or buying a new sports car from a dealership.

Although there is no official data to show how many buyers have made this move, the benefits of strong Taycan sales go both ways, both for buyers and for Porsche.

Buyers get extreme performance and the latest technology in an exclusive package, while Porsche can boast strong demand for what could have become an eccentric niche product.
