E3 2021 would be canceled, but it's not gone forever
Update: In response to TechComparison's request for comment, the ESA provided the following statement: "We can confirm that we are transforming the E3 experience for 2021 and will share exact details on how we are bringing the global gaming community together soon." E3 2021 is cancelled, well at least their in-person event is. We already suspected there wouldn't be a live-action gaming event at the Electronic Entertainment Expo in 2021, but the LA City documents now seem to confirm that's the case. Posted on Resetera (thanks to GamesRadar), LA City notes in its schedule, ahead of an upcoming meeting on March 3 about conventions taking place in the city in 2021, that E3 2021 is a "cancelled live event in 2021." ". While the schedule doesn't confirm exactly why the event is being cancelled, it's almost certainly due to the Covid-19 pandemic. That means we won't have a physical E3 2021, but that's not bad news. The schedule also specifies that the City “is working on License 2022 and 2023”, suggesting that there are plans to bring back a physical E3 event in the future, although when that will actually occur is unpredictable in the current global climate. This is good news for some given that the relevance of E3 has been debated since before the pandemic, with the likes of Sony skipping the event in recent years, given the success of major publishers despite the event being cancelled. completely last year, it remained uncertain if there were any plans to continue with E3 in the future. While these plans confirm that more physical E3 events are being considered, the future of the event (and the global situation) remains unpredictable. We reached out to the ESA to see if they had any comment on the City of Los Angeles agenda.

E3 can go digital

E3

(Image credit: ESA) While there may not be a physical E3 this year, it looks like we could have an all-digital E3 this year. As reported by VGC, The Entertainment Software Association (ESA), which hosts E3, has submitted proposals for E3 2021 to take place digitally over three days between June 15-17. According to the proposal, this digital event would involve live coverage during those days, consisting of "multiple two-hour presentation sessions from gaming partners, an awards show, a preview night on June 14, and other smaller broadcasts of game publishers, influencers, and media partners." Additionally, demos would be posted online, while the media would preview all games from the previous week's event via remote play streams. However, the ESA plan relies on the support of game publishers. Last year, E3 2020 was canceled outright, though the ESA said it intended to host the event virtually. Reasoning? Most developers and publishers have organized their own live streams online and show them instead. The digital event didn't take place, and fans instead tuned in to E3 alumnus Geoff Keighley's four-month-long Summer Games Fest, which is set to return in 2021, and a host of other digital showcases. It looks like we'll have a firm answer on whether the E3 2021 digital event will take place soon, with the ESA telling VGC: "We can confirm that we're transforming the E3 experience for 2021 and we'll share exact details of how we're bringing together soon." the global gaming community. "We're having great conversations with publishers, developers, and companies from all walks of life, and we look forward to sharing the details of your participation soon," the statement continued.
