Dyson Purifier Hot+Cool Formaldehyde HP09: a powerful all-in-one air purifier

One minute review

The changing seasons can make it difficult to accurately predict your indoor temperature and air quality, but with the Dyson Purifier Hot+Cool Formaldehyde HP09 you can be ready for anything.

By this point, we all know that Dyson is king when it comes to air, from making some of the best vacuums to their prolific Dyson Airwrap. He's now adding the Dyson Hot + Cool formaldehyde to his collection of bladeless fans, an all-in-one air handler packed with smart features and great design cues.

This makes it a practical and sophisticated device that saves you from having to run separate heating, cooling and air purifying devices. It should come as no surprise, however, that being a fancy Dyson product, the Hot+Cool formaldehyde comes at a fairly high price, which is one of our biggest gripes with the device.

However, for this high price, it offers good value for money. This air purifier can not only destroy cancer-causing formaldehyde, it can do so without the need for a replacement filter; its catalytic filter is self-sustaining, trapping formaldehyde molecules in water and CO2. The rest of the filtering is handled by two pairs of replaceable filters: H13 HEPA particulate filters and carbon filters, which Dyson says work with its catalytic filter to remove 99,95% of airborne particles down to 0,1 microns. .

Standing at 764mm / 30 inches tall, the Hot + Cool Formaldehyde is smaller than some of Dyson's other air handlers, and its 220mm / 8,6-inch diameter base is quite compact, meaning it It can easily be placed on a table or on the floor. The fan is also tiltable and offers 350-degree oscillation, making it easy to optimize airflow no matter where you place your device.

Unsurprisingly, the Dyson Hot+Cool formaldehyde is aesthetically beautiful, with a design that's futuristic but not obtuse. It's a bit of a shame, though, that there aren't any alternate colorways; Matching bronze base and remote may not be suitable for every home.

The Hot+Cool Formaldehyde comes with a remote that attaches magnetically to the top of the device, but there's also a sleek and easy-to-use app that allows for remote control. The latter offers a generous overview of the air quality in your home, monitoring not only the temperature and humidity, but also the levels of pollutants and particles (PM2.5, PM10, VOC, NO2, HCHO). You can also check the status of Hot+Cool filters through the app, making sure they are replaced on time.

Aside from the high price, our only real criticism of the Dyson Hot+Cool formaldehyde is that it lacks the ability to automatically turn on when it senses changes in the air. Otherwise, it's an absolute dream to own and use at home, taking care of your lungs in ways you don't even know you need.

Dyson Purifier Hot+Cool Formaldehyde HP09 review: Design

As you'd expect from Dyson's futuristic high-tech appliances, the Hot+Cool formaldehyde is a sleek, slender unit that takes the form of many of Dyson's other bladeless air treatment products.

Measuring 764mm x 220mm (H x D), the Hot+Cool Formaldehyde is quite compact, especially considering the number of features it houses. It's light enough at 12,6lbs/5,5kg to move around your home quite easily, and the 5,9ft/1,8m cord is a decent length to ensure it can be placed where you need it.

The base of the unit is plated in matte gold, with holes through which air is drawn in for filtering, moving towards the top-mounted bladeless ovular fan. This is where you will find the HEPA and carbon filters; The catalytic filter sits deeper in the machine, filtering contaminants and particles from the air.

The fan offers 350 degree oscillation and can be tilted up or down. Also note that the airflow can be adjusted to move both forwards and backwards, for those times when you don't want air blowing directly into your face. Just below the fan is a small LCD screen that displays live data.

The Hot + Cool Formaldehyde comes with a matching gold remote that, quite easily, attaches magnetically to the top of the fan. However, it is quite easy to remove, especially when the fan is tilted.

Dyson Hot+Cool Formaldehyde HP09 purifier review: Performance

During testing, I was very impressed with the Dyson Purifier Hot+Cool Formaldehyde HP09, which performed brilliantly for heating, cooling and purifying.

The fan offers 10 power settings, allowing you to customize the speed of the airflow, ranging from a gentle puff to a powerful blast of cool or warm air. It's also surprisingly quiet in operation; In night mode, the fan automatically adjusts to the smooth and quiet level 4, and its lowest setting is quiet, registering just 40dB on our decibel meter—equivalent to the volume of a quiet library. Even at its highest setting, the Hot + Cool formaldehyde registered 60 dB, which is about as loud as a spoken conversation.

With the app and controller, you can adjust the oscillation, rotation, and direction of the Hot+Cool Formaldehyde, which is incredibly useful if, like me, you need to change your environment throughout the day.

My apartment is often the victim of sudden changes in temperature, so I was a big fan of its automatic mode as a way to keep my workspace at a constant, comfortable temperature. The unit can heat up to 98°F/37°C (pretty fast too), taking my apartment from 21°C to 23°C in 15 minutes on its maximum setting (airflow 8,5 ft/2,6, 45m per second) and oscillating XNUMX°, cooling you quickly and efficiently to a less uncomfortable temperature.

As for purification, I tested the capabilities of my Hot+Cool Formaldehyde by spraying my dry shampoo spray near the device. The device quickly detected the change in air quality, indicating that the level of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) had increased on both the LCD screen and the app.

I then tried lighting some incense and a candle to see how Hot+Cool formaldehyde dealt with the particles. Just a meter from the purifier, the candle and incense stick changed the air quality from 'good' to 'very bad' according to the Dyson app, somewhat alarmingly, but managed to restore healthy levels within 10 minutes after activating the purifier. sure. When I repeated the test without turning on the purifier, it took me an hour to clear the "Very Lean" range.

The Dyson doesn't hit a complete home run with the Hot + Cool formaldehyde in my books, largely due to the lack of automatic features. While the device can be toggled in the app to constantly manage air quality, it's frustrating that it can't be programmed to turn on when it detects poor air quality. I'm sure there are clever ways to upgrade this feature using home hubs, but not having it as a native feature seems like a missed opportunity, and that's a concern users have eliminated with older Dyson air controllers.

Overall, though, I was very impressed with how quick and responsive the Dyson Hot + Cool Formaldehyde was during testing. Since my home has mold and moisture issues and is located right next to a major road, having greater visibility and control over the air quality in my home is a huge plus.

Dyson Hot+Cool Formaldehyde HP09 Purifier Review: App

The remote control is great, but it was the app that swayed me about the overall effectiveness and usefulness of the Dyson Purifier Hot+Cool Formaldehyde HP09.

Connected to the Dyson app, as with the manufacturer's other Hot+Cool and air treatment products, you can track the quality and temperature of the air in your home, the life of your filters, and also use various features fantastic smart.

These include a timer and calendar which will come in handy for those looking for a low-maintenance device...
