Don't buy the wrong PS5 SSD in Prime Day sales - it'll cost you

PS5 SSD deals were a dime a dozen this Amazon Prime Day. We've seen some pretty good discounts on PS5 storage space solutions in the form of internal SSDs. You may have been looking for one yourself if you're particularly interested in increasing your console's storage beyond that 1TB threshold.

Buying one of the best PS5 SSDs is arguably easier now than ever. Companies offer internal SSDs specifically designed for the PS5, like this version of the excellent WD_Black SN850 NVMe SSD. It also helps that this year's Prime Day deals have been great for SSDs in general.

But with so many SSDs on the market right now, and with so many discounts, it's easy to grab a bargain before seeing if the SSD is compatible with your PS5 in the first place. To keep you from wasting your money, and to avoid the headaches of Amazon returns, here's how you can quickly identify which SSDs will actually work with your console.

The first thing to note is that PS5 games can only be stored and played from internal SSDs. Although the PS5 supports SSDs and external hard drives, you will only be able to store PS4 games on it. This is because PS5 games require the high-speed resource management provided by an internal SSD.

But we are not out of the woods yet. Specifically, you will need a PCIe Gen4 x4 M.2 NVMe SSD. These are the best placed to harness the power of the PS5, guaranteeing extremely fast loading times. The aforementioned WD_Black SN850 NVMe SSD is suitable here.

So did the excellent Seagate FireCuda 530 SSD, which we also saw heavily discounted during the Prime Day sales. Both internal SSDs will work with your PS5. Plus, both are pre-installed with a heat sink, eliminating the risk of installing one yourself. If you're not sure what a heatsink is, here's why it's extremely important to install one on your SSD.

M.2 SSDs also have a distinctive look. They are usually slim and rectangular in shape, and have a semi-circular slot at one end that allows you to screw it into place when you install it on your PS5. On the other end, the one that fits into the SSD port inside your PS5, you have one long pin and one short pin.

Finally, and this is more of a point of using your best judgement, internal SSDs are expensive. Even more so if you're considering 1TB or 2TB of storage Even at the discount, you'll likely pay triple figures for an internal card with plenty of storage space. This is the main reason why making sure you buy the right internal SSD for your PS5 is so important.

Now that you know which PS5 SSD to look for and if you're sure you want to buy one, you're ready to go. And luckily, installing a PS5 SSD couldn't be easier (link), because the hardest part of the process is removing those pesky PS5 faceplates.

And don't worry if you missed out on one of the best Prime Day deals for SSDs. Internal SSDs for PS5 are only becoming more common as the console ages. And it probably won't be long before we see them launch at very attractive prices.
