Discord is rolling out 'Nitro Basic': a cheaper plan with four useful features

Discord, the platform for chatting with users on different servers about games and other topics, will launch a cheaper plan of its 'Nitro' subscription service for UK desktop users later today (August 18), called "Nitro Basic". ".

Priced at €2,49 / €2,99 per month to start with, Discord told TechRadar it's received feedback that users want access to the most popular features without paying €9,99 / €9,99. per month or €99,99 / €99,99 per year for the regular Nitro Plan (Opens in a new tab).

Julie Park, Senior Director of Product Marketing at Discord, told us that the cheaper plan will roll out later today for UK users for desktop users and for iOS users in the coming weeks.

Although there are only four features available to start with, these may tempt some users who didn't want to pay Nitro at its normal price every month or year.

What does Nitro Basic include?

To begin with, we asked Park why the test was starting in the UK and they told us it was due to the wide variety of age groups and the way servers are used on the platform, with the UK being one of the most popular markets for Nitro lately. , so the test location made sense to the team.

Using Discord while gaming has arguably become second nature to some, especially due to its availability on Xbox and PlayStation 5. However, Nitro Basic seems to be the best of both worlds for users: a cheaper monthly plan. with four popular options. features:

It could be said that without these four features to begin with, a cheaper Nitro subscription would be almost worthless. Fortunately, each of them will be tempting for those who use Discord almost daily.

Emoji is part of the platform, and being able to use custom, animated emoji will be tempting for many. Still, a higher file upload size limit, special decals, and even the "Nitro Basic" badge make it attractively priced for what you get. You don't get one of the adorable Funko-Pop-esque fake Discord figures used in their marketing materials, though, which is a shame.

By the way, we also asked Park if Discord is coming to Nintendo Switch. Anyone trying to set up an audio call using the Switch Online service is a challenge in itself, due to its complicated setup. However, Park confirmed that there are no plans yet for Discord to come to the Nintendo console.

Either way, Nitro Basic will be a tempting plan for many, especially casual gamers who can play a multiplayer game once a week. For others, though, the ability to use custom, animated emoji can only convince many other users that you'll be able to afford the service.
