Diablo 4 just stole the head of the Gears of War studio

Coalition studio head Rod Fergusson has announced he is leaving the Gear of War developer to oversee the Diablo franchise at Blizzard Entertainment. Fergusson made the official announcement on Twitter, revealing that he will be joining Blizzard in March, where he will no doubt join the team to develop the upcoming Diablo 4 and Diablo 4 Immortal. Check out his tweet below:

Starting in March, I will be joining Blizzard to oversee the Diablo franchise. The beginning is bittersweet because I love our Gears family, the fans, and everyone at The Coalition and Xbox. Thank you, it has been an honor and a privilege to work with all of you. pic.twitter.com/0FuO3RFYSQ5 February 2020 Fergusson has overseen the development of the Gears of War franchise since 2014, when Microsoft purchased the series from Epic Games. This move will no doubt be a blow to Microsoft and the Gears franchise, but with two new games in the pipeline, it's certainly an exciting time for the industry veteran to switch to the Diablo franchise.

What does this mean for Diablo?

While we didn't expect to see Roadie races appearing in Diablo 4, someone with a lot of experience on the Diablo team is certainly not a bad thing. Especially since Fergusson helped steer Gears 5 to critical success last year. And that's the kind of direction that Blizzard could (presumably) be going at the moment. The company has received quite a bit of backlash from fans in recent years for a variety of reasons ranging from its reaction to the Hong Kong protests to the disappointing reveal of Diablo Immortal, if we'll keep it short and simple. Diablo Immortal's reveal also forced the company's hand a bit, meaning it had to reveal Diablo 4 at BlizzCon 2019, likely ahead of schedule. But whatever, we now know that Blizzard is working on not one, but two Diablo games. We don't know much either, and we're not expecting any releases any time soon, but we do hope that with Fergusson at the helm, both games are worth their time.
