It was the first in development at Yager, the same studio that created Spec Ops: The Line, and was originally scheduled for a 2015 release. But that never materialized.

In 2016, it was announced that development had moved to Sumo Digital. Three years later, the game changed studios again, and Dambuster announced that they had resumed work on the game. Gameplay details for Dead Island 2 are scarce, but, thanks to the aforementioned Amazon listing leak, we have some information to dig into until the game is fully revealed.

Screenshots on the game's listing page suggest that the series' focus on melee combat will continue. Expect to hit zombies with sticks and baseball bats, rather than unloading magazines from assault rifles. Although there will still be a lot of gore. Amazon's blurb claims that the game's combat will provide "the most intense, visceral, and bloody first-person experience possible."

You will have a variety of weapons to choose from, depending on the propaganda, offering different tactical advantages, as well as six playable characters to choose from. Each character, or Slayer as they seem to call themselves, can be equipped with different skills and abilities. The blurb claims you'll be able to instantly respec them to "try out the craziest builds," and the mentioned day one DLC on Amazon suggests they'll also be cosmetic parts to dress them up with.

Of course, there will be "dozens of different types of zombies, each with their own mutations, attacks, and hundreds of LA-themed variations." However, it is not known what these variants will be like.

Dead Island 2's story remains a mystery, though it looks like you'll be playing as a survivor of a deadly virus that has destroyed Los Angeles. By teaming up with other survivors, you'll try to "uncover the truth behind the outbreak" while "exploding the zombie inside" yourself.

what we want to see

We've been waiting almost a decade for Dead Island 2, which gives us plenty of time to think about exactly what we want to see in the game. Our minds, our expectations have grown incredibly, dimmed only by the embattled process of game development. We may not know exactly what Dead Island 2 will be like, but that hasn't stopped us from dreaming.

For starters, we expect the first game to focus on melee combat. The original Dead Island tried to set itself apart from other zombie games of the time by emphasizing makeshift sidearms that could be upgraded with mods you'd find all over the island. Although weapons could be found, ammo was limited, so you spent most of your time pummeling the undead with nail-studded baseball bats or electrified hammers.

Leaked screenshots of Dead Island 2 suggest that the sequel will follow this trend. The player can be seen carrying a key that has been modified with a spiked wheel and what looks like a homemade stun baton. We'll have to wait and see the variety of weapons and upgrades on offer.

We'd also like to see Dead Island 2 build on the humor of the series. The original was hardly serious, and was at its best when embracing the colorful ridiculousness of battling hordes of zombies in a tropical paradise. Let's hope the sequel goes even further, forgoing a clunky melodramatic narrative in favor of a good old-fashioned ghoulish heist.
