Companies are adopting SDP to drive remote work

Enterprise VPNs (opens in a new tab) will eventually give way to software-defined perimeters (SDPs), but that change isn't expected to happen anytime soon.

That's according to a new report from NetMotion, which claims that businesses want to adopt SDP, but VPN still has a long way to go.

Based on a survey of approximately 630 IT and security professionals, the report indicates that nearly nine in ten (87%) businesses use a VPN today. Nearly two-thirds (63%) plan to continue using one by the end of 2022, while just under half (45%) intend to use the technology for more than three years.

The transition

As for why the transition is unlikely to happen overnight, the report argues that companies have too much local technology, which is a barrier to agility. Specifically, 98% have at least one local app, and three-quarters (75%) have at least four.

However, the number of providers offering SDP solutions (opens in a new window) is growing rapidly. According to NetMotion, there were only ten providers in the market two years ago, but that number has grown to more than 30, an indication of the category's "extraordinary" growth.

Four out of five organizations surveyed for the report said they were now more likely to consider an SDP solution, due to the rise in remote work caused by the pandemic. Meanwhile, seven in ten said they plan to adopt a solution within a year.
