CloudFlare has released a new family version of its DNS service called 1.1.1.1 for Families, which can be used to block malware and prevent children from viewing adult content online. By configuring their devices or gateways to use DNS 1.1.1.2 resolution, users can protect themselves from malicious websites. Parents can also use DNS resolver 1.1.1.3 to protect their children from malware and adult content. While version 1.1.1.1 for families was released with good intentions, the initial configuration of the CloudFlare filter for adult content ended up preventing users from visiting certain LGBT and sex education sites. In a statement to the Register, CloudFlare CEO Matthew Prince explained that the company is currently working to fix the bug, saying: "This was a horrible bug and we're working to fix it as quickly as possible. We use a variety of categorization services externals to categorize the internet. Our intent was to do something similar to “Google Safe Search” and there were certain categories that were included in adult themes by a vendor that we missed during our review.”
