BioShock, Borderlands, and XCOM 2 on Switch are too big to fit in one cartridge

Nintendo Switch owners got some good news at the end of March, with the new Nintendo Direct revealing that a number of classic video games were being transferred to the hybrid handheld console. That's right: The BioShock Collection, the Legendary Borderlands Collection, and the XCOM 2 Collection are coming to Nintendo Switch. Some of these games were pretty big versions on PC and consoles, but at this point we wouldn't be surprised to see them on Switch. With Doom and Doom Eternal landing on the Switch platform, and even The Witcher 3 being ported to console, it's clear that the humble Switch is about much more than paying rent to Tom Nook in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. However, there is a problem with these versions, which is the size of the installation file.

Make room for everyone

The Borderlands Collection, which contains the first two games and the 2014 pre-sequel, but not Borderlands 3, requires an additional 6.6 GB download on top of the data on the cartridge to load just the first game. playing Borderlands 2 or pre-suite, you'll also need an additional 35 GB download. The XCOM 2 Collection cartridge also contains a fraction of the total game, only 8 GB, and may require up to 24 GB of additional downloads. We don't have an exact figure for the BioShock Collection, but the fine print tells us that "in-game content and subsequent add-ons will also need to be downloaded." While the inclusion of these AAA games on the Switch is welcome, we've reached a point where physical game cartridges simply can't cope with the amount of data required to load modern titles. Currently, buying these cartridge sets is little more than a bulky redemption code and will still require you to use most, if not all, of the Switch's 32GB internal storage. Fortunately, there are plenty of good micro SD cards for the Nintendo Switch to consider, which can increase your storage capacity many times over, and we've listed some TechRadar-approved options below, but that really works against you on a physical release.
