Watch out for Chrome, Microsoft Edge just hit a major benchmark

Windows 10's continued push for users to switch to Microsoft Edge instead of Google Chrome may finally pay off, new data shows. The latest figures from NetMarketShare showed Microsoft Edge's market share rising to more than 10% for the first time, as the browser steals users from leading Google Chrome. This marked a huge leap for Microsoft Edge, which only accounted for 8.84% of all users in September 2020.

Internet Explorer vs. Edge

The company's figures for October 2020 revealed that Microsoft Edge now has 10,22% of the total market share, reinforcing its momentum for second place behind Google Chrome, which remains in the lead with 69,25. %. Figures from NetMarketShare also showed Microsoft Edge extending its lead over other rivals, with Firefox now at 7,22% and Safari at 3,40%. Microsoft can still improve, however, as data from NetMarketShare revealed that 5,57% of all users still use the company's venerable Internet Explorer browser. Microsoft has worked hard to push Windows 10 users to switch from Internet Explorer to Edge as it seeks to provide customers with faster and more efficient service. The company has even gone as far as automatically diverting users from Internet Explorer to Microsoft Edge in recent weeks. When an Internet Explorer user visits an incompatible site, of which there are currently over 1000, the page will automatically launch in Microsoft Edge, along with a message saying, "This website doesn't work in Internet Explorer." Microsoft has confirmed that it will phase out both Internet Explorer and Edge Legacy early this summer, as phase-out plans have been put on hold. Starting November 13, users will no longer be able to sign in to their Microsoft accounts through Internet Explorer, Microsoft Teams will stop supporting them at the end of the same month, and by August 17, 2021, no Microsoft apps 365 will be compatible with Browser. . After these times have elapsed, users of the unsupported web browser will experience a "degraded experience"; New Microsoft 365 features will not be available to latecomers, and existing web apps will be disabled.
