BAFTA 2020 winners: the full list, from 1917 to Joker

The 2020 BAFTA winners have been revealed, with Sam Mendes' 1917 film Great War winning best film, best British film and best director. This puts it in a good position to win the Oscar for Best Picture next Sunday. In all, 1917 won seven BAFTAs, while Joker won three, a solid result for any film based (loosely) on a cartoon character. Joaquin Phoenix won best actor, as he did at the Golden Globes. This bodes well for his Oscar chances. Meanwhile, Parasite, which has yet to be released in the UK where the awards were held, won two, for an original screenplay and a non-English film. If you're in the UK, you can finally catch this classroom-focused thriller next Friday. There was nothing for Netflix's The Irishman, but Laura Dern won Best Supporting Actress for her role as a tough divorce lawyer in Marriage Story. Roger Deakins, the legendary cinematographer who has already won four BAFTAs, chose Best Cinematography for his extraordinary work in 1917. This film, in case you haven't seen it yet, is presented in a single continuous two takes, giving you It gives its war-torn setting an unbeatable sense of place. The shooting must have been very exhausting, very good for him. The Oscars take place on February 9.
