AWS now offers Mac mini in the cloud

These Mac instances can be used to build, test, package, and sign Xcode apps for the Apple platform, including macOS, iOS, iPadOS, tvOS, watchOS, and Safari. The service aims to "accelerate the developer lifecycle" for app developers on Apple platforms.

Here's what Amazon says: “Our customers tell us they'd like their Apple build environment to integrate with AWS services,” said David Brown, vice president of EC2 at AWS. “With EC2 Mac instances, developers can now provision and access macOS compute-on-demand environments on AWS for the first time, so they can focus on developing innovative applications for platforms. advanced technology, rather than acquiring and managing the underlying infrastructure. "

And this is how Apple reacts:

"Apple's thriving community of more than 28 million developers continues to create revolutionary app experiences that delight customers around the world," said Bob Borchers, Apple's vice president of Global Product Marketing. . "With the launch of EC2 Mac instances, we're excited to make development on Apple platforms accessible in new ways and to combine the performance and reliability of our world-class hardware with the scalability of AWS."

Why is Amazon doing this?

Importantly, the service means developers get cloud-based access to a full Mac mini, which should help them build and test their software. Macs can be used to create render farms and CI/CDs for Apple environments, and to consolidate cross-platform Apple, Windows, and Android application development on AWS to speed time to market for new software. Amazon explains: “The Mac instances run macOS 10.14 (Mojave) and 10.15 (Catalina) and can be accessed via the command line (SSH) or remote desktop (VNC). Amazon Machine Images (AMIs) for EC2 Mac Instances are optimized for EC2 and include the AWS benefits you'll find in other AWS AMIs: an ENA driver, the AWS Command Line Interface (CLI), the AWS Agent CloudWatch, CloudFormation helper scripts, AWS Systems Manager support, and ec2 user account. You can use these AMIs as is, or you can install your own packages and create custom AMIs (the homebrew-aws repository contains additional packages and documentation on how to do this). "Amazon will make macOS Big Sur support available at some point. You can access Macs using SSH and VNC for remote desktop use. Here's a somewhat funny video made by Amazon about the new service.

Mac M1 will be available on AWS next year

The new Macs are based on Intel i7 processors, instead of the mighty M1 that Apple now puts inside the Mac mini. Amazon announces that it will install mini Mac M1 in its data centers early next year. He believes that the demand for Intel-based Macs will continue as long as these Macs are used. AWS Macs contain 32 GB of memory and are connected to Amazon's Nitro system. The company says that it will make new AMIs available whenever Apple updates its operating system. The cost is €1.083 per hour, billed per second, or about €26 per day.

what customers think

Intuit, Ring and FiLMiC are among the first customers to use the Mac mini-based AWS service. “With a global team of filmmakers, photographers, creatives, and software developers who share the same passion for mobile cinema and content creation, FiLMiC has designed what has become the industry's most sought after app that becomes a simple mobile device in a motion picture. camera,” said Seth Faxon, FiLMiC's iOS development manager, in an Amazon statement. “EC2 Mac instances give us the ability to expand our continuous integration build farm to move quickly through development, testing, and TestFlight. This leads to better speed and more time working on the fun stuff.

grow the market

Amazon's move to Mac is not unique. It's entering a space already occupied by Macstadium, which has offered hosted Mac infrastructure for years, including integration with AWS. The company already offers M1 Mac minis to customers in its fleet of more than 20.000 people. Writing on Twitter in the wake of the news, MacStadium VP Brian Stucki said: "Obviously Amazon is a huge fish to dive into. Another part of me is very proud to see the Mac mini reach this level. Without However, the platform and vision started... 16 years ago. The move reflects the scale of Apple's rapid growth in the enterprise market.
