AWS is down and has taken large chunks of the internet with it

UPDATE: The AWS Official Dashboard has released the following statement: “We are seeing an impact to multiple AWS APIs in the US-EAST-1 zone. This issue also affects some of our incident response and tracking tools, delaying our ability to provide updates. We have identified the root cause and are actively working on the restoration. "

UPDATE: 12:30pm ET / 4:00pm GMT - DownDetector notes that crash reports are dropping in all fields and certain sites like Facebook and Disney Plus are pretty much back to normal. However, the official AWS status table still shows issues for multiple services.

Much of the Internet is experiencing widespread inconvenience this morning as a potential outage disrupted parts of Amazon Web Services (AWS).

According to data from the real-time fault monitoring service DownDetector, the accident began around 12:00 pm ET / 3:30 pm GMT, and thousands and thousands of users reported problems in Europe, Asia and the US.

Along with Amazon.com, other essential sites like Facebook, Disney Plus, Ring and many more appear to be struggling, as well as Amazon services like Alexa and Prime Video.

How was downtime noted? There are a number of online services that proactively track whether popular sites are up or down. This is an alteration to site monitoring services, which is especially useful for site authors or those who are new to web hosting.

Amazon's official dashboard has been updated with messages confirming the outage.

The issues appear to be centered in the AWS US East-1 zone, which is hosted in Virginia, with certain users in other zones experiencing no outages.

The outages affect multiple core AWS services, including increased API failure rates with Amazon DynamoDB and Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud, such as Amazon Connect, which handles contact center calls.

The AWS Management Console and AWS Support Center also show "increasing failure messages" in each and every territory.

The AWS Management Console acts as a central hub for AWS customers to access their suite of AWS services, allowing them to direct the full range of cloud computing and cloud storage.

"We are experiencing high failure rates for EC2 APIs in the US-EAST-1 zone. We have identified the root cause and are actively working on the restoration," AWS added on its official status page.

“We are having issues with the API and the console in the US-EAST-1 zone. We have identified the root cause and are actively working on the restoration. This issue affects the global console home page, which is also hosted on US-EAST-1. Customers of the Service can access specific zone consoles at https://console.aws.amazon.com/. So, to access the US-WEST-dos console, try https: //us-west-dos.console .aws.amazon.com / "
