Arms push to meet commitment to double UK workforce

Semiconductor company Arm faces an uphill battle to meet a legally binding commitment to double the size of its UK workforce by September 2021. As a condition of its purchase of Arm in 2016, Japanese conglomerate SoftBank agreed to has committed to increasing the company's UK workforce to a total of 3.494 within five years. The move was intended to allay fears that the UK was selling one of its most valuable assets and ensure a lasting commitment to Arm's homeland. However, Arm has so far only managed to assign roles to 3.004 employees in the UK, 490 short of the target. Over the last twelve months, the number of Arm employees in the UK has increased by 262, up from 208 the previous year. But the company will have to nearly double the hiring rate this year to reach the required number.

Arm Recruitment Commitment

Although SoftBank recently agreed to sell the UK chipmaker to Nvidia for €40 billion (pending regulatory approval), Arm CEO Simon Segars has confirmed that the leasing commitment is not affected. The company's hiring campaign has been somewhat hampered by the pandemic, but his ambitions remain constant in this department. “We have always recruited. There will be a fairly large number of graduates,” Segars explained. When news of the Nvidia purchase emerged, some feared that nearly 300 jobs were at risk due to the company's ambition to integrate its own technology into Arm products. However, Segars has dismissed the rumors as unfounded and says Arm has no plans to sell Mali, its graphics-focused business. through the telegraph
