Apple may be prepping a pair of MacBook Pros with new M2 chips to arrive in late 2022

Apple's new MacBook Pro models that will theoretically debut with the M2 Pro and M2 Max chips won't launch this month, but should arrive before the end of the year, according to Vine.

This comes from one of the most trusted sources on all things Apple, Mark Gurman (and his ever-present Bloomberg newsletter (opens in a new tab)), in which, among other things, he claims that the new iPad Pros are imminent (exciting), but the MacBook Pros are not (less exciting).

But the good news is that the MacBook Pros with the M2 Pro and M2 Max silicon, which are the upgraded versions of the M2, just like the M1 that came with those variants later, are "on the right track." to launch in the near future.

Gurman speculates that the most likely time for these refurbished laptops to arrive is November because, as the leaker points out, that's traditionally when new Mac hardware launches. It certainly sounds like he thinks they'll be here before the end of the year, anyway; with all the usual skepticism around rumors applied. (Although it's worth remembering that this isn't the only time we've recently heard speculation that these MacBook Pros will appear before the end of 2022.)

Gurman notes that the first version of macOS Ventura adds support for these new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro laptops.

Still on the Mac front, Gurman says that Apple is currently working on a new version of the Mac mini that will include the M2 chip inside.

Analysis: Minimal changes, minimal inconvenience…

The main change for these MacBook Pro laptops will be the addition of these more powerful processors, and Gurman notes that other than that, any difference to these devices will be minimal. So don't expect much more than the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro engine upgrade.

It will be a low-key launch, the sponsor thinks, simply because there aren't any big moves to make with the hardware that would make it worthy of a big, flashy event (or even a small, moderately flashy event).

It's also worth noting that Gurman says he doesn't expect MacBooks to accompany the iPad Pro any time soon, but that doesn't mean Apple can't make a surprise move and launch them. So, you never know, laptops may arrive sooner than expected (or, for that matter, iPad Pro models may arrive later).

As for the Mac mini, an M2 version matches Gurman's earlier rumors in which he claimed Apple was working on an M1 prototype in the compact PC (for a late 2021 or early 2022 release), but ruled out. that idea in favor. to use the M2 chip instead.

Previously, apparently, the idea was that there would be a regular M2-powered Mac mini and also a model with the M2 Pro, which makes sense in terms of placing them alongside Mac Studio (the latter being the higher end). But we'll see, and Gurman doesn't mention which chips might be used this time.
