Apple would ship devices and accessories to customers directly from its North American retail stores. The company has traditionally used a network of distribution centers and factories in China to process online orders, but the ability to use inventory from nearly 300 stores in the United States and Canada could speed delivery times. The model was apparently inspired by other retailers, especially supermarkets, and the belief that it can cut costs, increase margins and reduce environmental impact.

According to Bloomberg, there won't be an option to order in a store and customers won't know where their device came from. All changes will take place behind the scenes and the program will apply to orders placed within 100 miles of a retail location. The implementation would also allow Apple stores to continue selling devices even if they are closed due to Coronavirus restrictions. The company shuttered its offices around the world during the height of the pandemic and has since converted some back rooms into small support centers. It's unclear if such a model could be exported to the UK, where Apple has 38 stores, or if it would have as big of an impact given Britain's smaller footprint. Apple has been contacted for comment. Apple is expected to introduce several new products this week, including what would be the first iPhone to support 5G networks. Via Bloomberg
