(*two*)

The first thirty seconds of the trailer show multiple scenes as well as a monologue from Jonathan Majors' Kang the Conqueror (more on what this means in the next section). Most of the images include shots from the first trailer for the film, which arrived in October XNUMX.

It's not until 0:37 that we see something new, but it's pretty significant as far as Kang is concerned: it's his mask! In contrast to the comic book version of Kang, which depicts him as a blue-skinned individual, the Marvel Cinematic Cosmos (MCU) iteration of Kang has a blue retractable face covering, presumably allowing him to breathe in low-oxygen environments. and guard his countenance. Of the damage.

The inclusion of a translucent blue mask is therefore a subtle and playful nod to the makeup of his comic book counterpart.

2. The man with the plan

Let's go back to Kang's monologue now. We hear the MCU's new main opponent appeal to Scott Lang's status as his father and how he missed spending so much time with his daughter Cassie. Well you know, because of those jail sentences and the 5 years he spent trapped in the Quantum Realm between Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.

Unfortunately for Scott, Kang isn't just going to give him what he craves, which is more time with Cassie, for nothing in return. So it looks like Scott is going to have to put his pre-superhero skills to the test: breaking and entering, stealing an item, and getting out alive.

So what does Scott need to find and/or steal? The trailer doesn't reveal it, but we do have an idea, based on Kang's comic counterpart. In the Marvel source material, Kang has a device known as the Time Chair, a floating seat that allows him to traverse the Marvel Multiverse. So far, we haven't seen Kang using this device in any of the images, which begs the question: where is he?

In our opinion, someone has stolen or hidden Kang's time chair. In order for him to finally conquer the Marvel Cinematic Multiverse, well you know, now that one of his variations, He Who Remains, isn't around to stop him after his death in Loki Episode 6, he needs his Time Chair to travel in the weather. and space Advance Scott Lang, the only man who can traverse the Quantum Realm (in his Ant-Man suit) and retrieve Kang's Time Chair using his thief abilities.

Oh, and it looks like Kang is going to use Cassie as collateral to get Scott to comply. It seems that our little hero has no choice but to attend...

three. Ringtone in references to Shang-Chi

Once the Marvel Studios logo disappears, we enjoy spectacular images of the Quantum Realm/Kang domain.

The most interesting part of what we see is an apparent reference to Shang-Chi and the legendary Tale of the Ten Rings. We see multiple circular pillars floating around Kang's seat, the design of which resembles a pyramid. Fun fact: If that's not a direct callback to Rama-Tut, the Egyptian variation of Kang in the Marvel comics, we don't know what is.

But we strayed. Those cylindrical structures aren't the only things teasing a connection to Shang-Chi's MCU debut. At 0:47, we see multiple giant rings next to Kang's fortress, and they closely resemble the ten rings that Shang-Chi's father (and, later, Shang-Chi himself) maniates in the Marvel stage. . four movie.

One of Shang-Chi's post-credits scenes suggests the possibility that the Ten Rings are highly technological alien instruments. Could it be that, in the Quantum Realm/this alternate cosmos, Kang has stolen Shang-Chi's father's rings and is using them for his own purposes? Given the interconnectivity the MCU is famous for, we wouldn't be surprised.

4. MODIFY MODOK

Now this is truly a snap and you are going to miss it. At 0:56, we see Scott and Cassie being led to a platform by Kang (and some of his foot soldiers) to look at what appears to be some kind of tear in the multiverse.

Look behind them before the camera angle changes and you'll get your first glimpse of another Quantumania villain - it's MODOK! In the MCU, the origin story of this supervillain has been altered. In the comics, MODOK is created around the time a scientist named George Tarleton turns into him when, yes, you guessed it, an experiment goes wrong.

However, in the MCU, MODOK is played by Corey Stoll, who played Darren Cross/Yellowjacket in XNUMX's Ant-Man. In that movie, everyone thought Cross was deceased when Scott trashed his Yellowjacket suit. However, Cross perfectly survived, and we believe that Kang is the person responsible for a) saving his life and b) transforming him into MODOK. This would explain why Cross works with Kang to get revenge on Scott and company.

Anyway, later in the trailer (1:45 mark), we see MODOK getting ready to do battle with someone. He has some serious upgrades from the comic analogue of him, most notably those energy cannons under his little arms, so expect this MODOK to be deadlier than he is in the comics.

5. Chain an Ant-Man combo

Whatever mission Kang wants Scott to accomplish, our hero will need all the help he can get.

Fortunately for Scott, it seems that breaking the physical rules of the Quantum Realm is his best chance of success. At 0:51, we see Scott split into two versions of himself. At first, this seems to continue the line of "broken timelines" that Janet van Dyne claims.

However, we believe that this is a misdirection. We believe this scene of Scott's separation takes place after he plunges into, well, whatever that stormy pit we see at the 0:58 and 1:04 marks. Next, we see Scott being held in a lightning-infused structure by millions of other Ant-Men, the very same ones who are destroyed at 1:37, in a way reminiscent of how ants make chains and rafts on the real world. .

So it looks like the Quantum Realm is going to split Scott into many variations of himself to fill Kang's job, only to have those other versions die while he tries to escape.

6. More than a time travel genius

Kang screams as he releases two blue laser beams in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania

Unsurprisingly, it looks like Kang won't be playing ball once Scott successfully wins back the factor Kang wants back.

In the final thirty seconds of the trailer, we see Kang's army, complete with Black Panther-like warships, rain energy down on our heroes. Meanwhile, we hear Scott tell Kang "we had a deal," which clearly implies that Kang is going back on a) giving Cassie back and b) letting Scott and company get away unscathed.

What becomes clear from the final snippets of footage is that Kang is not some dutiful time-traveling intellectual. Not only do his convulsion bursts and laser beams from him seem impressively powerful, Kang's screaming last hit as he unleashes them is terrifying, but he's also a physically impressive and brutal fighter. He just looks at the raw power he displays as he kicks and punches Scott in what is likely to be his final showdown. Prepare for Kang to bring pain during Phases five and 6 of Marvel's Multiverse Saga.
