Another Total War game is coming to mobile phones, but it's an odd choice

One of our most played mobile games continues to be the fantastic Port of Rome: Total War, along with its spin-offs Barbarian Invasion and Alexander. The team that brought this to mobile as well as the Tropico and XCOM 2 ports, Feral Interactive, has returned to the Total War series for their next port.

The developer has announced that its next title coming to iOS and Android will be Total War: Medieval II, which, as you can probably tell from the name, is set in medieval times.

You will be able to download the title in the spring of 2022, according to the developer. Based on the way above, we wouldn't be totally surprised if the game released on one operating system before the other, but we don't usually see exclusives from Feral ports.

Feral Interactive also released a short trailer for the game, but if you're familiar with the title, there's nothing surprising here.

We don't know compatibility yet, for what phones will be able to play the game or how up-to-date their OS needs to be, but hopefully we'll hear about it before the game is released.

This game looks fun, but what's arguably the biggest news is that Feral clearly hasn't stopped with Rome: Total War, and is working to bring more Total Wars to mobile. a lo largo del tiempo. Sin embargo, Medieval II no sería nuestra primera opción if tuviéramos that guess lo that estaba por come.

Analysis: a good choice, but a strange choice

Total War: Medieval II was the next game made by Creative Assembly (the developers of Total War) after Rome, so it follows that it would be the next title to be ported, but unless Feral brings all Total War games to mobile devices, we think it's a strange choice.

Don't get me wrong: Medieval II is a great game, this writer has nearly 200 hours logged on Steam, but it's an odd choice compared to Rome.

First, there's the reception of each game: On Metacritic (admittedly, that's an extremely difficult way to compare popularity), Medieval II is one of the few classic Total War games to score below 90, with 88 (which follows still impressive).

But more importantly, Medieval II and Rome are pretty similar in terms of gameplay, even for the Total War games - in the grand scheme of things, the time periods they're based on aren't that far apart chronologically, and the war is not It was not so far away. different.

So while Empire: Total War has weapons and Warhammer (and later) Total Wars has heroes, both of which bring significant changes to the game, Medieval II and Rome feel pretty similar to play.

But it's possible that these similarities are what make Medieval II an easy port: the map is quite similar to Rome (albeit much larger), and Feral doesn't need to find a way to bring weapons and characters with abilities into battles.

So the choice to port Medieval II makes sense, and we're far from disappointed: we'll definitely be putting hours into it when it comes out. It just amazes us that another game like Empire (a writer's favourite) or Shogun 2 (a fan favourite) hasn't been picked first.
