AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3990X Overclocked to 5.5 GHz Sets World Records

The impressive AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3990X, with its unprecedented number of 64 cores, is already setting world records not even 24 hours after its release. The latest and most powerful iteration of AMD's third-generation Threadripper lineup is poised to become the new favorite toy for extreme gamers after overclockers set world records on February 7, 2020. As Tom's Hardware reports, professional overclockers TSAIK, Allen "Splave" Golibersuch and safedisk have demonstrated everything the Ryzen Threadripper 3990X can do. By combining the new HEDT processor with carefully selected hardware, all three managed to overclock their 64 cores to a clock speed of 5.5 GHz.

New world records for overclocking

Using liquid nitrogen (LN2), TSAIK overclocked all 64 cores of the chip to 5,548.71 MHz. He pairs his Ryzen Threadripper 3990X with MSI Creator TRX40 motherboard and DDR4 RAM clocked at 1866 MHz with CL times 13-13-13- 31. Splave, on the other hand, has paired its Threadripper 3990X with the ASRock TRX40 Taichi motherboard and now has the best GPUPIs for CPUs: 1B, Geekbench 3 multi-core, and Cinebench R20. He overclocked his chip to 5,475.43 MHz, 5,375 MHz, and 5,305.88 MHz, respectively, using liquid nitrogen for at least the first two. Finally, safedisk currently holds the wPrime 1024m and Cinebench R15 benchmark records, clocked at 5,125 MHz and 5,225 MHz. These world records come a few days after chip benchmarks surpass it against Intel Xeon Platinum processors 8280, which are considerably more expensive at €10,009 (about €7,715, A€14,830). The AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3990X currently retails for $3,999 (about $3,080, A$5,925). It's available for purchase now, if you only have an extra few thousand dollars lying around.
