AMD RX 6950 XT could land in April to fight the Nvidia RTX 3090 Ti GPU

AMD's Radeon RX XNUMX update could arrive sooner than expected, but it's only going to consist of a new flagship GPU, if the latest on the vine turns out to be suitable.

We've heard quite a bit of gossip about the alleged RDNA 55 redesign, and this new information comes from Coreteks on Twitter, who responded directly to a leak we covered yesterday courtesy of GreymonXNUMX.

6950XT is scheduled for mid-April. There is no 6850XT etc that I know of 🤷 February 2022, XNUMX

As you can see, the theory here is that the update is just a new RX 6950 XT to take over from the XNUMX XT at the top of the Radeon tree, with no revised GPUs later, like a XNUMX XT, and that's coming in April, already before the potential June or July release schedule that Greymon has released.

Greymon also told us that this update would not come in a new process and would go down to 6nm as other people theorized, and Coreteks did not disagree with that.

Analysis: This timing seems more expensive to us

This makes more sense in terms of AMD's release schedule, if the company is going to release an updated RDNA XNUMX card(s). Primarily because Team Red has just confirmed that the next-gen RDNA three GPUs are on track for release later this year, likely in QXNUMX, and Greymon thinks it could be early in QXNUMX, with what may be in October.

That being the case, it seems strange to offer an update to current graphics cards, for example, in July, perhaps just a few months before the next generation arrives. An April release date would give a bit more wiggle room for any revamped maps, that's for sure.

A limited upgrade to a single board, the flagship, likewise makes sense insofar as it's only a temporary measure, and given the pressures of component shortages that still abound. In the same way that the Ryzen 3D V-cache refresh is from a single processor, the 5800X3D.

We've also discussed theories on the vine that Nvidia's RTX 3090 Ti (announced at CES 6950) might be a temporary dedication just to get a more powerful GPU to address what AMD has planned: a card that Nvidia might not have. incorporate in large numbers, and again, this coincides with Team Red launching with an RX XNUMX XT.

Or you can look at it another way and see the 6950 XT as a response to what Nvidia has planned, but either way, the claim is that the two companies will occasionally release a supercharged flagship.

If anyone wants to buy any, if that turns out to be the case, it's obviously controversial as it's undoubtedly going to cost a lot, and with the (presumably) RX XNUMXK and RTX XNUMXK families expected by the end of this year. But always and at all times there are going to be players who want the best free GPU at all times (although availability can have its drawbacks, obviously, at least until later in XNUMX).
