Chipset and quirks

The AMD Radeon RX XNUMX XT, like the RX XNUMX and RX XNUMX series cards, is based on AMD's new RDNA XNUMX architecture, sometimes affectionately referred to as the ``Big Navi''. This means that all the improvements from those other graphics cards are here too, like increased power efficiency and, of course, ray tracing. In RDNA two, ray tracing is accelerated through ray accelerators, one per computing unit. And, since the AMD Radeon RX XNUMX XT has forty compute units, that naturally means there are forty radio accelerators here. However, compared to even the top-tier Radeon XNUMX series card, the RX XNUMX, which has XNUMX compute units, ray tracing performance will slow down noticeably here, and it does. Unlike Nvidia's second-gen RT cores found in something like the RTX XNUMX, this is still AMD's first-gen hardware-accelerated ray tracing. So while it's going to be able to trigger maximum visual pleasure, it's going to have a significant impact on performance, as it did on Nvidia's XNUMXth series cards when they were released. AMD has its super FidelityFX resolution in the works, which would help a lot in this area, but we still have no idea when this technology will truly be available. It's clearly not present here, although AMD has a few tricks up its sleeve to improve the performance of certain games. One of the most essential technologies for this is SAM, or Smart Access Memory. Essentially, this gives your processor direct access to graphics memory, drastically reducing the rendering process for in-game scenes. However, it's not a feature that kicks in automatically and isn't even something with so you can play on Radeon software. To enable this feature, you need to go to your BIOS and enable resizable bar support. It is very easy to find on certain maps and more obscure on others. But if you're not comfortable with your BIOS, it's not a thing you should be doing at all. The AMD Radeon RX XNUMX XT of course also supports AMD's ever-growing suite of visual effects and performance-enhancing FidelityFX. The most important of these for most people, especially those who just want a higher frame rate, will be Radeon Boost and Contrast Adaptive Sharpening, or CAS. Radeon Boost will reduce the visual quality of scenes with a lot of fast motion, so you can get an increased frame rate, at the cost of visual effects in parts of the scene that you probably wouldn't appreciate anyway. Adaptive contrast sharpening helps when running at a resolution lower than the native resolution, enhancing the sharpness of soft images without deteriorating scene color and contrast. There are many other effects in the FidelityFX suite, but these are the 2 that we advise most of the people. With the Radeon RX 6 XT, AMD hopes to help people weather future games, at least as long as the durability is still real, with XNUMXGB of GDDRXNUMX memory. Certain 1440p games will start to use as much memory, but even these don't see much of a performance difference when using a 12GB card over an 8GB model. And especially when the AMD Radeon RX six thousand seven hundred XT is so expensive, it seems that AMD could have reduced that VRAM to 6GB or 8GB and made the card a bit cheaper to better secure its place in the market. When you look at the specs beyond VRAM, the RX 186 XT is limited to 2424 CPUs and XNUMX stream processors with a XNUMXW power budget and XNUMXMHz gaming clock, you'll find the actual GPU is the limiting factor most of the time.
