AMD could be Samsung's first 3nm client

US company AMD could ask Korean tech giant Samsung to build its first 3nm chips instead of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC).

According to a new report from Taiwan's DigiTimes, sources familiar with the matter believe that the close relationship between Apple and TSMC is the reason why AMD would consider going with Samsung to make its 3nm chips.

At the same time, AMD's semiconductor business has seen strong growth this year, and research firm IC Insights estimates that it could increase revenue by 65% this year. In the first three quarters of this year, the chipmaker generated total revenue of € 11.5 billion and if IC Insights' forecast comes true, AMD will contribute € 4.5 billion in the fourth quarter of 2021.

AMD's growth is driven by strong data center sales and its EPYC server chips are now in four of the top ten most powerful supercomputers according to the latest edition of the Top 500 list that ranks the world's most powerful supercomputers. annually.

Get away from TSMC

Besides Samsung, it also appears that Qualcomm is interested in Samsung's 3nm chips, according to a separate DigiTimes report.

The publication's sources believe that TSMC's close relationship with Apple has also left Qualcomm dissatisfied, and that it could ask Samsung to build 3nm chips as well.

The Taiwanese semiconductor maker believes it will start production using its 3nm manufacturing process in the first half of next year. Wccftech notes that TSMC is often thought to give preference to Apple when it comes to buying semiconductors made with its latest technologies because of their close relationship, which has made it possible for the iPhone maker to deliver devices with the latest processors.

While Samsung is expected to start shipping devices using its 3nm chips in the first half of next year, TSMC is a bit late as it will start 3nm production in the second half of next year with products using its latest. chips in 2023. Moving from TSMC to Samsung, ARM and Qualcomm could end up getting 3nm chips faster without having to compete with Apple for them.
