AMD Big Navi GPU leak debunks 'misleading' power consumption rumor

AMD's new Big Navi-based AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT GPU will boast a TBP of around 320W, which means it will require the same amount as the Nvidia RTX 3080. That's according to a new report from Igor's lab, which debunks a recent leak by Patrick Schur that suggested the Navi 21 graphics card would have a power consumption of 255 W. The report claims that these figures were initially "distorted" because they refer to TGP instead of TBP; AMD calls the power consumption of the entire board TBP (total board power), while Nvidia calls the equivalent TGP (total graphics power). That 255W figure, says Igor's Lab, only represents the GPU. When you add all the other components that are critical to power consumption, such as the Radeon RX 16 XT's 6900GB memory interface, MOSFETS, auxiliary input, and more, the total figure rises to 320W, rising to 355W for custom cards. . “The actual power consumption of the Navi 21 XT should be roughly the same as the GeForce RTX 3080,” Igor's Lab writes. The report also looked at the non-XT Radeon RX 6900 and calculated that the GPU will deliver full power. 290W card, increasing again for AIB cards. The Nvidia RTX 3070, by comparison, has a total board power of around 220 W. The report also suggests shedding light on graphics card memory configurations, suggesting that AMD's Navi 21 GPUs will use Samsung memory modules from 16Gbps. According to Igor's Lab, the first AMD Ryzen RX 6000 series custom graphics cards will be available in mid-November, just a few weeks after AMD officially unveiled its first Navi 21 GPUs on October 28.
