The 2019 Amazon Echo Dot model with clock is only a modest upgrade. Technically it's still a third-generation Echo Dot, but now it comes with a neat display on the side that can display the time. The older, standard third iteration of the Echo Dot is available in three colors: charcoal, heather gray, and sandstone (which will be black, gray, or white for the rest of us). The hockey puck speaker has a more refined look thanks to the fabric finish, much better than the previous all-plastic version. The standard-size Amazon Echo speaker just keeps getting better and this new third-generation model marks the biggest improvement yet, especially for music fans. The audio architecture is now in line with what's found in the pricier Amazon Echo Plus thanks to neodymium drivers, a larger 3-inch woofer, and a bigger tweeter, too. It is still slightly larger than the second generation model, while maintaining the same height. The overall aesthetic remains though thanks to the fabric design, though Amazon has released a new color for the occasion in Twilight Blue (see image above). If you already have a Dot and want to supplement the sound with a little extra boost, this is going to be a great buy. With a new version on the shelves, we'd only go for this version of the Amazon Echo if there's a significant discount. And as stores start to drain inventory of the new Echo, we should see some great deals soon. The second generation Amazon Echo was the middle ground of the Alexa family, with a more powerful speaker than the Echo Dot. This second-gen version is a bit shorter, but houses an upgraded speaker with clean Dolby processing. At launch it was the 'perfect' choice of the Echo range. It's not as cheap as the Amazon Echo Dot and it's not as premium as the Amazon Echo Plus. Back in 2017, I would have bought it if I wanted to use the smart speaker primarily for quality music, but wanted to keep prices low. Amazon revamped the Echo Plus smart speaker in late 2018. Then it revamped the Echo in 2019. Now they look a lot alike.
