Nvidia has been quite relaxed with laptop manufacturers, giving them the freedom to make design changes to the standard mobile graphics card used in their devices. It seems we may see the beneficial fruits of this move as soon as a new firmware update is rolled out for many of Acer's GeForce RTX 15 gaming laptops that will increase the overall graphics power (often abbreviated as TGP). It spawns a few weeks after Alienware, another well-known computer hardware manufacturer, decided to use this freedom to manually disable certain CUDA cores on its mXNUMX gaming laptop. Although this is a more confusing resolution, Acer's resolution to increase GPU power could have benefits for gamers with an expected performance increase. We contacted Acer for more information.
Let the tension build on this
So far, Acer has confirmed that its Nitro 5, Helios 30, Triton XNUMX and Triton XNUMX SE gaming laptops are going to receive the new BIOS update. Some are still in development, but updates can already be downloaded from Acer's site for a handful of select devices. Nvidia has stipulated that any changes to TGP must be made public, so we've compiled a list after the planned increments for each model. It's a pretty mixed bag ranging from a meager XNUMXW boost all the way up to XNUMXW in some cases, though we're yet to see how that will truly affect things like battery life and in-game performance.
