IPhone 12 Accessories: What's in the Box and What You'll Need to Buy

IPhone 12 Accessories: What's in the Box and What You'll Need to Buy
One of the biggest rumors about the iPhone 12 ahead of launch was that Apple might ship the device without headphones or a charger, and that turned out to be true, for the most part. Apple has chosen to remove a few different items from the iPhone 12 box provided by previous iPhones, but not all of it, so you'll still find it somewhat packaged with the device. The reason given for the iPhone 12 omissions is to reduce electronic waste, and that certainly makes sense: most people opt to buy their own headphones instead of using the cheaper ones in the box, for example. , and even if you're using the EarPods, you can still wear your old pair (unless it's your first iPhone). But if you haven't kept up with what's new in technology, it can be hard to know what's included in the box, what you need to get separately, and what extras you might want. That is why we have created this guide to accessories for iPhone 12.

What's in the box:

The following items are provided in the box of your iPhone 12. Obviously, we do not count the documentation and the SIM card removal tool here.

iPhone 12

iPhone 12 (Image credit: Apple) It would be quite a controversial move for Apple to take the iPhone out of the iPhone box, and we don't know what the company would put in its place. Of course, buying your iPhone 12 will include the phone in the box, although there isn't much else...

Lighting cable to USB-C

Lightning - Cable USB-C de Apple

Apple's Lightning - USB-C Cable (Image credit: Apple) The only other thing in the box for your iPhone 12 is a Lightning to USB-C cable. You can plug the Lightning end into your iPhone, but it's worth noting that USB-C isn't the "typical" USB port you might have on your computer, or find in some wall sockets at airports, cafes, or the like. Some newer laptops and computers have USB-C ports (including MacBooks), but to charge your phone from the wall, you'll need a wall charger with a USB-C port. It does not connect to any AC adapter.

What do you need to buy:

The following items don't come in the iPhone 12 box, but you'll likely end up buying them to enhance your iPhone experience anyway.

Wall charger for iPhone 12

Apple Wall Charger (Image credit: Apple) The iPhone 12 box doesn't come with a power outlet and you'll need one to connect your phone to the mains. It's quite possible that you already have one, so you won't need a new one, but you really should check it out first. Most wall chargers that come with devices have USB-A ports, that's the large rectangular input, but the iPhone 12 cable plugs into USB-C, it's a smaller input with rounded edges. . If you have to buy one, Apple's website sells one, but it's a bit pricey, so it might be worth looking into a USB-C wall charger from Amazon.

IPhone 12 Headphones

Apple AirPods

(Image credit: Apple) The new iPhone 12 doesn't come with built-in wired headphones. If you have any of your old iPhone that connects to Lightning, you can use it, but if not, is it time to switch to wireless headphones? Apple is probably crossing its fingers that it wants to upgrade to its AirPods or AirPods Pro, but there are plenty of other options on the market (we haven't given the non-Pro AirPods very positive reviews). We'll post prices for some below, but check out our best wireless headphone guides and best wireless headphone guides for more. Some people may prefer wired headphones, and if that's you, it's understandable: wireless options can be expensive, and the reliability of plug-and-play wired audio is nice to have. You can buy EarPods on Apple's website, and there are plenty of Lightning headphones on Amazon; just make sure the pair of headphones you buy plugs into a Lightning port. What you could also buy:

While these are not essential to the smartphone experience, they can help improve the way you use your smartphone.

Wireless charger for iPhone 12

iPhone 12 MagSafe

iPhone 12 MagSafe (Image credit: Apple) Wired charging is old school; wireless is the future, though no smartphones come with wireless chargers in the box yet. The iPhone 12 supports 7.5W wireless charging with all Qi chargers (most wireless chargers are Qi), but with Apple's proprietary MagSafe, which uses magnets on the back, this goes up to 15W. iPhones have supported Qi charging for quite some time, and there are plenty of wireless chargers sold on Apple's website. You can also check out our list of the best wireless chargers to find other options. Apple's MagSafe is a new addition to phones so how useful it is remains to be seen, but 15W wireless charging sounds great. Only Apple sells MagSafe technology through its website, though third-party sellers may start soon.
