Windows 10 settings could see its biggest change in years
Windows 10 is testing new options for users' initial operating system setup; for example, gamers can make their system better suited to their gaming needs right from the start. This change was made with preview 20231, which is currently being tested in the dev channel, but please note that only a small number of Windows Insiders will see this new options screen to get started. Microsoft notes that this is something people have asked for in their blog post: “Based on feedback, we are considering adding a page to the Windows Setup (OOBE) to better understand how you plan to use it. your device and help personalize your device for its intended use.” The language seems to imply that Microsoft isn't entirely convinced this will become a final piece of the Windows 10 puzzle, as it's just exploring the idea for now. But if that happens, users will be able to choose the primary use of their Windows 10 machine during setup. As it stands, the available categories are: Gaming, Family, Creativity, Schoolwork, Entertainment, Business. With Gaming selected, it appears that your Windows 10 PC will be tuned to play better and report on new builds, though it's unclear exactly how that works and what changes were made under the hood at this point.

Still to expand

And indeed, in this preview, there's no real meat behind the new screen, which means that no matter what you choose, you won't see any difference after the initial setup experience. Currently, the installation experience itself will offer different options, mind you, depending on what you choose; However, those options simply won't bring luck later on. This is the main change with this new preview build, though there are several other changes and small fixes as you'd expect, including the implementation of a setting where your GPU details will be present in Settings > System > About (only a few experts will see this to begin with, as with the previous change). Businesses will also benefit from better management options in terms of default file associations, as Windows 10 allows you to change file associations on a per-user or per-device basis.
