Businesses are affected by more cyberattacks than ever before, as the effects of the lockdown and the Russian-Ukrainian conflict create the ideal conditions for crime in the virtual realm.

A Check Point Research (CPR) report indicates that global attacks increased by 28% in the third quarter of 2022 compared to the same period last year.

While certainly not the only reason, the Russo-Ukrainian war was highly influential, as just three days after the invasion of Ukraine, the CPR said, there was a 196% increase in cyberattacks against the government and the country army. On the Russian side of the fence, there was a 4% increase in attacks.

In total, the company recorded 1130 attacks against businesses around the world every week of the year. While 2022 started with attack growth, it leveled off along the way, CPR said, saying the slowdown was due to companies increasing investment in their cybersecurity strategies (opens in a new tab) and governments that went the extra mile to find and stop the hackers. . .

Among industries, education has been the hardest hit this year, the report states, saying this is because schools are not fully prepared for Covid-19 and are doing things remotely. CPR's August report states that this sector suffered more than double the average number of weekly attacks and as we approach the end of the year, there has been no change in this trend. In the third quarter, this sector is facing 2.148 attacks per organization per week, an increase of 18% year-over-year.

The public and military sectors are the second most attacked sectors, with an average of 1.564 attacks per week, 20% more than last year.

The biggest change came in the healthcare sector, which suffered 60% more attacks this quarter than in the same quarter last year. This time, the industry saw 1426 attacks per organization, per week.
