Two leaks of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 reveal possible price and design

We're less than two weeks away from the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 announcement on August 10, but as is often the case with high-profile phone launches, the phone has more or less been leaked in its entirety. In fact, two big leaks have now landed more or less simultaneously: one revealing the likely design, the other the likely price.

First, let's take a look at the possible design of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4, thanks to leaked renders shared by Evan Blass, a leaker with a great track record, via 91Mobiles (opens in a new tab).

These appear to be official press renders, and they show the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 in three shades: black, beige, and a sort of grey-green.

You can see there's a triple-lens camera and a design that looks basically identical to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3, which isn't a surprise as leaks suggested it. In fact, we've seen leaked renders before that also showed this design, so it's probably accurate.

The leak also includes some renders of the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4, and they look very similar to the Galaxy Z Flip 3, as well as renders that match previous leaks. You can see a dual-lens camera here with a black stripe across the rear, while the rest of the rear is shown in a choice of graphite, gold, blue, or purple.

Then we have the prices. According to South Korean site Naver (opens in a new tab), the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 will start at 1 won for 998GB of storage, rising to 700 won for 256GB. We won't worry about the conversions as these are the exact same prices the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 launched at, suggesting prices in other regions could be identical as well.

That would mean a starting price of $1,799 / £1,599 / AU$2,499, rising to $1,899 / £1,699 / AU$2,649 for 512GB of storage. Notably, this is slightly at odds with another recent leak, which suggested prices would go up quite a bit, so we'd take that with a grain of salt.

This latest source suggests a small price increase for the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4, which reportedly starts at 1 won for a model with 299GB of storage, increasing to 000 for 256GB.

However, while it's a slight price increase, you'll also get more storage up front if this leak is correct, and converted prices for the 4GB Z Flip 256 could be around what the 4GB Z Flip 256 costs. – it's just that there may not be a cheaper 128 GB version this time. That could mean a starting price of around $1,049 / £999 / AU$1,599 this year.

(*4*)Analysis: a disappointing Flip

If Samsung raises the price of the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4, it could hurt what is currently the company's most mainstream line of foldable phones.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 would have sold very well, and surely at a price that, by foldable phone standards, was very affordable. To maintain or build on this momentum, we expected Samsung to keep the price the same or lower it even further.

Of course, the company could still do that, as it's just a leak right now. It also seems strange that Samsung isn't offering a 128GB model this year, especially if skipping it means a higher starting price.

So let's cross our fingers for a cheaper base model than the one we heard earlier. It's never going to be affordable enough to be one of the best cheap phones out there, but if it's priced right, it could easily be one of the best flip phones around.
