Toshiba UK31 4K TV (43UK3163DB) Review

THE BEST DEALS OF THE DAY

One minute review

The Toshiba UK31 is a very stylish 4K television that, at a cost of £ XNUMX for a XNUMX-inch screen, offers more than enough value for money.

As is to be expected from a television of this cost, its audio performance is nothing unique, so we recommend purchasing a sound bar if you can afford it, but the image quality more than makes up for what it lacks in other places. .

Toshiba's TRU Picture Engine software, as well as Dolby Vision and HDR support, ensure this bundle delivers a clean, fluid image with acceptable contrast that is likely to enhance your viewing experience the next time you go. .

However, if you enjoy watching the latest Disney Plus or Apple TV Plus hits, be sure to enter a streaming key first (such as a Chromecast or Fire TV device), as the UK31 smart platform lacks multiple key services. .

Gamers can also estimate to bypass this television, as the twenty HDMI ports are the best this television has to offer, which means that the picture quality of your preferred console will be limited to only 4K / 60fps, even if your platform is high-end, you can do better. .

Prices and availability

The Toshiba UK31 is currently for sale in the UK, and is freely available in either forty-three or fifty-eight inch sizes.

We tested the forty-three-inch version that costs € three hundred and seventy-nine while the fifty-eight-inch version sells for € five hundred and twenty-nine, however, we have seen that it sold for less previously. Throughout Black Friday sales two thousand twenty-one, we saw this TV drop to € three hundred and twenty-nine / € four hundred and forty-nine, so if you're not burdened with updating your home theater system now, you may want to wait until the next period. .

If you are in the US, you may want to try the Toshiba C350 instead; While it doesn't come with identical specs, you'll find many comparable quirks at roughly the exact same cost as this UK31 bundle.

Integrated

The Toshiba UK31 has a very elegant frame and design that does not make it look like a cheap TV, although there are still some drawbacks with the TV look.

It is supported by a single large bracket that gives more than enough support, but the connection between the screen and the bracket is somewhat weaker than we would like. Although we had no drawbacks, the set can be put together too simply, leaving us concerned that it might come loose from the base.

Also, the base is not particularly high. In general, this is not going to be an inconvenience, but if you plan to use a sound bar, it could possibly get in the way of the screen, unless you can raise your television a bit higher, or simply put it on the wall.

However, the main protest we have with the television design is the green power light at the base of the screen. Although we eventually learned to ignore it, the light is brighter and more attractive than we would like throughout the job, especially if you want to turn off other lights in the room to further the impact of your television screen.

As for the ports, you will find 3 HDMI ports twenty that accept 4K at XNUMX Hz. One of these ports accepts eARC to connect a sound bar. You will also find an Ethernet, a digital optical output and a USB port to connect a multitude of devices.

Remote control isn't fancy at all, but it will get the job done. It has a standard set of buttons to perform TV functions, such as shortcuts that will give you quick access to Prime Video and Netflix streaming services.

Smart television

The Toshiba UK31 operating system is undoubtedly the area where this computer fares the worst.

While the TV's interface is simple to navigate, a major drawback that you'll immediately notice is that certain key streaming apps are missing. You can access Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and YouTube, but there is no Disney Plus or Apple TV Plus (and music lovers will appreciate that Spotify is missing as well).

Considering that these are certain more popular services with great shows like The Mandolarian and Ted Lasso, it is not only disappointing but rather surprising that you cannot access them natively through this television.

Other than that, the Alexa integration doesn't have much to say. If you're immersed in the Amazon ecosystem, you should get auxiliary functionality by connecting to compatible Alexa products. The UK31's built-in Alexa support isn't quite as refined as it is on more high-end TVs, though, with the voice assistant often responding even when we don't say "Hey Alexa." However, you can completely disable the smart assistant.

Image performance

Fortunately, the Toshiba UK31 is doing well where it counts: its imaging performance is great compared to other budget devices.

The 4K picture on this TV is clean and clear, and thanks to the Dolby Vision and HDR10 codecs in this set, the colors are bright and vivid. Medium brightness means that the UK31 cannot compete with high-end equipment, but achieves solid image output for the cost.

This is a budget 4K TV, yet it manages to progress low-resolution content admirably, while Toshiba's TRU Flow technology ensures smooth, stutter-free images for fast-paced sports games and more.

Finally, TRU Micro Dimming helps to progress the contrast of this television. Although it achieves much better performance with OLED displays, which stand out for supplying different levels of black, the UK31's Micro Dimming technology improves the rendering of dark scenes, beyond what you might expect at this cost.

The only downside we've had with the TRU engine is that the TRU Flow runs too often for our liking, and it can make what you see feel somewhat abnormal.

Audio performance

While you won't be surprised at the sound the UK31 can generate, the sound quality of its twenty W speaker system is more than enough to get the job done for those on a tight budget.

The lows are fairly light, but the mids and highs are sustained enough so that each scene is perceptible, clear, if not overly conclusive. If you're just looking to relax while watching TV each and every day, you're going to be thrilled with what you get.

But if you can afford to work out on a soundbar, you'll get an essential performance boost.

One of the main reasons for this is that this UK31 is equipped with the Dolby Atmos codec. Native speakers can't give you a good job, but a decent average soundbar can indeed do that, giving your television's audio performance an essential leap that would rival a higher-end home theater setup.
