This new email scam tricks victims into calling scammers
Experts at security firm Kaspersky have warned of new waves of vishing scams surrounding users with outlandish purchase requests. The company says as yet unknown criminals are posing as well-known hardware and software manufacturers, "warning" people about their gaming laptops, Apple smartwatches and software license purchases. Regardless of the product, the purchase price is usually quite high, and the goal is to scare the victim into calling the number in the email. Once the victim bites the hook and calls the number, the attackers will try to extract any valuable or personal information over the phone, or try to get the victim to install malware. “This particular variety of spam is unrelated, but includes a phone number that the victim is encouraged to call if they wish to change or cancel the order. And if the victim does call, it is very likely that the criminals will try to change the login credentials for certain financial services or bank card details,” says Roman Dedenok of Kaspersky's content filtering team. “Alternatively, they may try to trick the victim into transferring money or even installing a Trojan horse on her computer, which is known. Therefore, users need to be careful when they receive unexpected emails in their inbox. So if you get an email telling you about an expensive purchase you can't remember, and the email also contains a phone number you need to call to cancel the order, don't do it.

Defend against phishing and vishing

Instead of calling the number provided in the email, victims need to log into their account with the service in question, but not via email, but directly via the browser. Installing a reliable antivirus solution with protection against financial attacks, phishing, and online fraud wouldn't hurt either. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are often targeted by these attacks because their employees are often understaffed, overworked, and therefore easy to be caught unawares.
