Here's what Samsung's next foldable phone might look like, and it's rolling
We've seen the Samsung Galaxy Fold (and Z Fold 2), a phone that folds out to become a tablet; We've seen the Galaxy Z Flip, a ``foldable'' phone that folds in half to become more portable, and now we can get a taste of what Samsung's next foldable phone might look like, and it works. This is from a patent recently released by the US Patent and Trademark Office and discovered by Patently Apple. It should be noted that a patent doesn't confirm that the company is working on such a phone, but since it was released alongside similar patents for the Galaxy Z Flip 5G and Galaxy Z Fold 2, it seems possible that this phone could be the real thing. . Well, this patent is not for a finished phone like other devices, but for foldable technology: rollable screens. The patent shows a screen that rolls up into a rectangular block, which you can remove when you want to use the device. It is better compared to pull down projection screens. There aren't many phones with a roll-up display, so even if this phone is available, it probably will be in a few years. But such technology could give you a giant screen in a relatively small device. We're going to call this phone the Samsung Galaxy Z Roll for now, not because there's no indication that it's called that, but because it makes sense given the naming conventions of the foldable phone company.

(Image credit: Samsung/Patently Mobile) Rolling screen technology might sound weird, futuristic, and a little silly, but it's not the first time we've heard about it. LG is hard at work on rollable TVs, and one of them could launch as late as 2020, but perhaps at an astronomical price. The company is also working on "expandable" displays for its smartphones. So it looks like rollable screens could become big in the TV world, and perhaps we'll see the technology make its way to smartphones as well. This makes sense: there are arguably more use cases for phones that roll up to take up less space than there are for TVs. We'll have to see what the future holds to find out how rollable screens work, if Samsung is using them, and what the company's next foldable phone will look like. We'll bring you the latest news on this front when we have it, so stay tuned to TechRadar for that.
