Steganos Safe Reviews | The comparison

Steganos Safe Reviews | The comparison Many people think of encryption as a modern concept, but it is as old as human communication. The first documented use is in non-standard hieroglyphics found on Egyptian artifacts dating to 1900 BCE. C., clearly an attempt to prevent everyone from reading its meaning. Ancient scholars understood surrogate digits and used them to send messages that only the intended recipient could read. However, the turning point in cryptology came with the advances in mathematics available in the XNUMXth century, leading to the military ciphers used during World War I and mechanical encryption machines, such as the Enigma, widely used during World War II. World War. The complexity of these devices and the importance of using cryptanalysis to crack these codes led to the first programmable computers. Today we take a look at a powerful encryption tool designed to protect files inside an impenetrable math bubble that can only be accessed by someone with the correct password. Steganos Safe offers this feature and more for an annual subscription. Let's see if that justifies this departure.

Award

Steganos Safe 22 is the latest version and costs €34,99 (€34,84) directly from Steganos. Downloadable software is licensed for use on up to 5 PCs for one year. Unfortunately, there are no longer term licenses or discounts for bulk purchases at the point of purchase. What is being offered is a fully functional 30-day trial, which allows a potential customer to fully experience the software. Any encrypted vault created with the software can still be read after the trial or license is complete. They simply cannot be added or changed without a current license.

An internet connection Steganos Safe version 22 was released on September 10, 2020 and is the latest incarnation of a product that saw the light of day over twenty years ago. Although it's only been a few months into this release, Steganos has already released seven updates to the original 22.0.0, and the version we're using is 22.3.0 (revision 12860). These changes included bug fixes, interface optimizations, and some additional enhancements. Steganos Safe's functionality is basic but highly focused on providing what customers need most to protect documents from prying eyes. It has two components, the secure create and maintain functionality and a file shredder to irretrievably shred documents. Shredder was previously a stand-alone software technology, but is now integrated with version 22. However, the core functionality is the encryption engine, and it can be used in many subtle ways to protect files and folders on the installation computer, entire partitions, network attached folders, external hard drives, USB drives and even Dropbox, Microsoft OneDrive, MagentaCLOUD. and Google Drive cloud storage. The scope of these possibilities goes a bit to override the limitation that this software only works on Windows machines. However, it would be better to see a mobile version for iOS and Android eventually. Creating a safe, especially one that resides on the computer, is remarkably simple, and along with the password mechanism that we'll discuss later, the safe file is hidden on the system to prevent it from being an easy target for anyone searching the system. . . Hiding the file is something we've seen done on other systems, but the caveat with this stealthy approach is that backup applications may not include the invisible file when protecting the drive's contents. The solution Steganos devised for small vaults under 3 GB was to make the vault appear as a standard document, such as a video or audio file. The system even allows you to choose an existing MP3, M4A, AVI, WMV or EXE file and embed the safe into it. This file will continue to work as it should on the system, playing videos or music, even if it has been changed. We like this thinking because the container can be backed up and it doesn't scream "safe data here" to anyone who has invaded the system.

The packages allow for quick selection of processor, memory and storage, as well as the operating system of your choice (Image credit: Steganos Software GmbH) The workspace of a vault is limited to 2TB, but the size of the vault can scale dynamically from a much smaller original size. USB portable safes are limited in size by the file format used on the drive, but they work in the same way as local safes. Cloud storage encryption is another option that ensures that anyone viewing the files stored there has Steganos Safe on their system and the correct credentials to access it. Of all the features, the only one that could be potentially dangerous for unselected users is the ability to encrypt a partition. The difference with this option is that when you select the partition to encrypt, you receive an unambiguous warning that it will erase the existing content of that partition. For those who are using a computer while thinking about something else, this could easily go wrong. However, you must run Steganos Safe with administrator privileges to make these changes, hopefully avoiding the disastrous reflex clicker. This feature is best configured during initial PC setup, as partition sizes can be more easily adjusted and assigning a special partition for this purpose is relatively easy for experienced users. Encrypting partitions may require more knowledge than the other options, but the end result is an easy-to-use solution where the PC has a specific drive that is locked from access by those without the password. But the security side of this solution is more complicated than a simple password, and we consider that to be one of the strengths of this offering.

Security

Steganos takes security very seriously, as some of the tricks used in Steganos Safe are more sophisticated than those of competing solutions. As with any system that uses passwords, the quality of those passwords is critical to securing or potentially undermining this. That being said, it is possible to set passwords that are very insecure, although the software will tell you that they are bad and not try to convince you that they are good when they are not. The maximum password length is 20 characters and we recommend that you use special characters in upper case, at the bottom and for maximum impact. The system will automatically generate passwords or create them from image selections if you want the least predictable passwords. Once a password is generated, it is copied to the clipboard to be placed in a password vault if you are using one. For manually entered passwords, a virtual keyboard is provided, preventing the possibility of disclosure to any keylogging software installed on the system.

(Image credit: Steganos Software GmbH) If passwords aren't enough, two-factor authentication is available with a QD template to allow the vault to appear in Google Authenticator or simple services on other platforms. Our only caveat about this 2FA implementation is that instead of creating a single 2FA link for this Steganos Safe user account, you create an entirely new one for each vault you create. Each of these links has a specific strong name, but having that many in your authenticator list can quickly become tedious. In addition to the password and 2FA options, an additional emergency password can be set to provide read-only entry to the encrypted vault for others to use. Again, this is specific security and not a general backdoor. The use of 384-bit AES-XEX encryption realistically negates any practical brute force hacking approach to unlocking a safe. That leaves hacking, which can display what's happening on the screen or copy passwords to insecure locations or appear in documents or emails, as the only weaknesses. No encrypted system is 100% secure, but it should at least protect your files from hackers.

Use

As encryption tools disappear, this one embodies simplicity. Each option provides a wizard that guides the user through creating a safe space for sensitive files and explains the nuances of the functionality they use. As an example, when creating a portable vault, the file size limitations of a FAT32 file system are explained, and with the standard password, you are also encouraged to create a password. Emergency allowing read-only access to others if they need it. this. The good thing about all the solutions is that the level of security you want to use is very granular, allowing it to be simple for less critical data and then much stronger for truly sensitive files. Forcing all users to use complex 20-character passwords would likely end badly for many of them, so having some flexibility in a vault's security is appropriate. Surprisingly though, we did find a few wrinkles in this system given the number of updates it has seen. The Portable Partition Wizard completely ignores network drive letters and will put your virtual security controller on it if you annoyingly insist. He can specify drive letters to avoid this, but surely he should only use drive letters that are not already in use. Another curiosity is that when creating a portable safe, he places the files necessary to provide local access to the contents on the same drive. Using the reduced USB version of Safe does not use a license, but it must be installed on a remote system to access it. And this system may need to be rebooted after the Steganos Encryption Engine has been installed locally. A solution that does not install files on other computers would be preferable, but this is a limitation of how Steganos Safe currently works. We also mentioned 2FA quirks above, another aspect that needs to be tweaked. Overall this is a solid solution that works well in many situations. Considering the number of...
