South Africa sees sharp increase in spam calls following ease of blocking

This year, you may have noticed a marked increase in spam or robocalls. These frustrating calls prevent you from answering an unknown caller. The Truecaller Insights report identified South Africa as the 2019th most polluted country in the world. However, this is an improvement, as in 11,3 the country ranked sixth. Users receive an average of 25,2 spam calls per month, compared to 20 spam calls in last year's report. This is the first time in three years that these calls have decreased. This still puts South Africa in the top XNUMX countries for spam calls. As you probably guessed, insurance and scam calls account for the largest percentage of calls received. So no, it's not just you who are being persecuted by the insurance companies.

Lock collapse

Truecaller's report highlights how spam calls fell during lockdown. Between March and April, calls fell 59%. That didn't last long, seeing a 191% increase from April to October as lockdown restrictions were relaxed and everyone returned to work. Not only did those calls bounce back, but they did so with even greater force. Truecaller noted a 17% increase in calls when comparing October to the previous close.
