Nintendo's new patent hints at sleep tracker with a smelly twist
Nintendo has patented a new sleep tracking device that will monitor your sleep and even produce pleasant scents. In typical Nintendo fashion, the device would represent a fresh approach to the growing sleep tracking market with a host of new features. According to the patent, the device could stream relaxing images to your ceiling using a built-in projector (does the sheep mini-game count, anyone?), as well as your previous night's sleep monitoring information. Most intriguing, however, is the device's ability to produce a variety of scents to help induce or interrupt your restful sleep. Sleeping mists aren't entirely new, and transmitters have become commonplace in most households, but if Nintendo has discovered that we all sleep better when a room is filled with the smell of freshly washed Mario overalls, so that we are there for The mobile device, which sits on a base station near your bed, also includes a Doppler sensor that can capture your breathing, pulse and body movements. It has a detachable element (which looks like a phone) that will track your activity throughout the day and sync data to the base station if it's nearby. The patent was filed last September and was recently made public (thanks, Japanese Nintendo). The sleep tracker may never come to fruition, of course, but Nintendo clearly believes it's an idea worth protecting.

Turn it on

Nintendo has been very clear about its ambition to enter the health-related space. During the Wii U era, Nintendo revealed that it was working on a "quality of life" device, but nothing has come of it since this initial announcement, dating back more than five years. Nintendo has had great success with its fitness-oriented game Ring Fit Adventure and the Nintendo Switch in general, but this patent designates new hardware that serves a specific purpose.

sleep like a snorlax

Nintendo's new patent isn't the only sleep-tracking device we've recently heard about in the video game industry. Pokémon also announced its own sleep tracking app, Pokémon Sleep, which would tie in with its insanely popular mobile app, Pokémon Go. The app would require a new Pokémon Go Plus accessory, and users would place it next to their pillow every night. However, no other details have been revealed since its announcement in 2019.
