Netflix's Mindhunter might return for season 3 after all

Last year, fans of Netflix's acclaimed series Mindhunter were devastated to learn that the show was on indefinite hiatus and its cast would be released from their contracts. While many (including us) have accepted that Mindhunter was 'probably' done, there is once again hope that we could see a serial killer-themed third season of the series, according to a report from Small Screen. Citing sources close to the streaming giant, the report says that talks have resumed between Netflix and director/executive producer/co-showrunner David Fincher. Fincher signed an exclusive four-year deal with Netflix late last year that has so far resulted in the Oscar-nominated film Mank, which could be described as a passion project for the distinguished filmmaker.

Why we are optimistic about Mindhunter: S3

Given Mank's success, it's likely that Fincher's relationship with Netflix is currently at an all time high, making it a perfect time to return for a third season of Mindhunter. Of course, it's no secret that Mindhunter has taken a lot of effort for Fincher, who told Vulture last year that "it's a 90-hour work week. It sucks everything in your life. By the time I finished I was pretty exhausted and I said, ' I don't know if I can crack the third season right now.'" Another reason the show got stuck was because of its huge budget. "Look, for the audience it had, it was an expensive show," Fincher explained. "We talked about 'Finish Mank and then let's see how you feel,' but honestly, I don't think we can do it for less than I did in season two." So would Netflix be willing to shell out the money Fincher would need to make a third season of Mindhunter his way? It's very likely: if there's one thing Netflix is happy to spend money on, they're the potential winners. And, given the current hiatus on Netflix's prestigious original content, we imagine the streaming giant would be more than willing to hang on to one of its best shows, even if it's something of a loss leader.
