Each state is now responsible for setting its own laws regarding online sports betting, unless Congress passes new legislation. And that includes the likes of some of the biggest names in the business, like FanDuel and DraftKings. So where is sports betting legal right now? Currently, 14 states and the District of Columbia allow the public to place bets online. Read on to find out who now allows gambling and what restrictions remain in place.
Colorado
Colorado approved online sports betting in November 2019. Regulators are still ordering their ducks, however, so there will be no online sports betting until at least May 2020.
District of Colombia
The District of Columbia has legalized online sports betting, but there is currently a court order preventing the DC lottery from creating a platform for betting. We still don't know if and when this will be resolved.
Illinois
Illinois is slowly creeping into online sports betting. The state created a process to allow in-person and online sports betting at existing casinos in late 2019. But there is no online sports betting yet.
Indiana
Online sports betting launched in Indiana in October 2019 with the launch of DraftKings and BetRivers and FanDuel sports betting.
Iowa
Iowa legalized online sports betting in August 2019. But, at least until early 2021, you will need to appear in person at an approved state casino to create an account. online sports betting.
Michigan
Online sports betting is legal in Michigan as of December 2019, but there is no platform that accepts bets yet.
Mississippi
Mississippi has legalized online sports betting, although it is quite restrictive. You can only place a mobile bet when you are on the casino property. At the moment, only one tribal casino offers a mobile application to take advantage of this option.
New Hampshire
New Hampshire approved online sports betting in June 2019. The state lottery has partnered with DraftKings, making it the only online operator to place bets in the state.
Nevada
The state most synonymous with gambling in the United States, Nevada, was actually exempt from PAPSA. This means that online sports betting has been legal in the state for quite some time. New Jersey

Rhode Island approved online sportsbook in March 2019. Sportsbook Rhode Island is the only online sportsbook operating in the state. All online wagering is administered by the state lottery in association with the William Hill sportsbook.
Tennessee
Tennessee has legalized only online sports betting. Currently, neither platform works, but the low barrier to entry means that most major sports bets are likely to open in 2020.
W.V.
West Virginia legalized online sports betting shortly before the 2019 NFL season. DraftKings and FanDuel currently allow online gambling statewide.
What happens next?
Soon there will be many more states where online gambling is legal. Nine states are expected to legalize some form of sports betting in 2020, while six others have laws under consideration that could pass in 2021.
