Peacemaker, a new series spinoff of the upcoming Suicide Squad Peacemaker movie reboot, has been picked up by HBO Max. The new venture sees writer-film director James Gunn take the helm of the TV show, with John Cena returning for the role of the title character. The streaming service ordered an initial eight episodes of the "action-adventure comedy" and while specific story details are not yet known, the series is said to reflect Peacemaker's origins. Production is expected to begin in 2021. "Peacemaker is an opportunity to delve into current global issues through the lens of this superhero/supervillain/and world's biggest jerk," Gunn said of the project (via Variety). “I am excited to expand The Suicide Squad and bring this character from the DC Cinematic Universe to the full extent of a series. And of course getting to work with John and Peter and my friends at Warner Bros. is the icing on the cake. "I've said before that it's been a great honor and an incredible opportunity to be a part of The Suicide Squad and to work with James on what is going to be a fantastic movie," Cena added. “I am incredibly excited to have the opportunity to team up with him again for Peacemaker. We can't wait for the fans to see it. "
