GSMA: Mid-band 5G will bring €610bn boost to global GDP

Research by mobile industry body GSMA predicted that 5G powered by mid-band spectrum could deliver a €610 billion boost to global GDP growth by 2030 and urged governments and regulators to adopt policies that ensure operators access to sufficient radio waves.

5G networks will use a much more diverse range of spectrum than previous generations and mid-range frequencies between 1 GHz and 7 GHz will be essential to fully deliver on the promise of next-generation networks.

While low-band spectrum offers significant range and interior penetration capabilities and high-band waves offer enormous capacity over short distances, mid-band frequencies offer a compromise between these two desirable outcomes.

mid-band 5G

The GSMA report, released ahead of next week's Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, says mid-band 5G will generate almost 65% of the $960.000 billion socio-economic value created by 5G in the world. course of the next decade.

Most of these benefits will come from basic use cases such as mobile broadband and fixed wireless broadband (FWA), but a quarter will come from new services for sectors such as health, education and manufacturing, as well as services public as smart cities.

Muchos países, incluido el Reino Unido, han lanzado spectro de banda media a los operadores, pero la GSMA quiere más acción. He called for greater cooperation between the public and private sectors and for regulators to make an average of 2 GHz of mid-band spectrum available for licensed 5G use, noting that there is a 1 GHz shortfall. in numbered countries.

It wants the 3,5GHz, 4,8GHz and 6GHz ranges to be harmonized globally so manufacturers can achieve economies of scale.

“Keeping the promise of 5G will require global, regional and local action by governments and industry to make enough mid-band spectrum available,” said Luciana Camargos, GSMA Head of Spectrum. “An average of 2 GHz of medium spectrum is needed, and there is work to achieve it. As the world looks to usher in a new phase of economic development, government planning for 5G expansion is crucial. »
