AMD launches Ryzen 6000 laptop processors at CES 2022 to give Intel nightmares

AMD is aiming for the Intel laptop crown, with Team Red launching its Ryzen 6000 mobile processors at CES 2022.

AMD's XNUMX Ryzen desktop processors once gave Intel a run for its money in computing, and now it is battling against laptops, where Intel has traditionally had a huge market share advantage.

During AMD's keynote presentation at CES 2022, moderated by Dr. Llana Su, we got a glimpse of the new line of Ryzen 6000 notebook processors, which employ the basic Zen 3+ architecture and are made with an optimized sixnm process.

This, AMD asserts, leaves the new notebook processors not only more powerful than the company's previous mobile chips, but also more energy efficient, making staggering claims about battery life.

According to AMD, the Ryzen 6000 series mobile processors are the "fastest AMD Ryzen processors to date," with clock speeds of up to XNUMX GHz and processing speeds XNUMX times faster than Ryzen XNUMX mobile processors.

Win the game

AMD also claims that these processors are going to be ideal for gaming laptops, as they now come with their integrated RDNA two graphics, which the company claims are up to a couple of times faster than their next-generation integrated graphics.

With a new display engine, AMD claims it's the "first graphics chip on the planet capable of smoothly playing the vast majority of PC games in Full HD." We're sure Intel will have a say in that regard, especially during its CES 2022 show later today, but AMD suggests you can play modern games at 1080p without needing a card. Dedicated graphics.

That's an incredible boast, and if done, it could represent thin and light gaming laptops that can handle graphics-intensive games with relative ease (with HDR support and AMD FreeSync to boot). It could also have a huge impact on budget gaming laptops, whereas without a dedicated GPU, laptops should be worth less.

As is often the case, AMD has shown off graphs (admittedly handpicked) that show just how high-end the AMD Ryzen 6800 7U fares in certain games compared to the Intel Core i1165-7G1080, claiming up to 'three times the performance'. of Doom Eternal at 1080p on low settings and up to eighteen times the performance of Fortnite at XNUMXp on medium settings.

Obviously, you are not going to be able to play intensive games like Far Cry 1080 on ultra settings and get a good experience, but for an integrated GPU, these are staggering assertions. However, with AMD's FidelityFX Super Resolution technology, the company promises around fifty-nine fps (frames per second) at XNUMXp on medium settings (a performance increase of more than fifty% compared to turning off FidelityFX, according to AMD ).

We hope to test AMD's claims for ourselves later.

Twenty-four hour battery life

AMD also claims that the power efficiency of the Ryzen 6000 processors should translate into a very incredible battery life for laptops, with up to XNUMX hours when playing local video, supposedly.

New power management features and a new adaptive power management framework should let these processors use a lot of power only when they need it, saving power (and time, battery life) when not in heavy use.

Again, based on AMD graphics, 6000 series processors use XNUMX% less power than XNUMX series when video conferencing with Microsoft Teams, XNUMX% less power when browsing with Chrome, and XNUMX% less when streaming Netflix through Google Chrome.

Since laptop battery life is the number one concern some people have when purchasing a new device, these promises are quite exciting.

The Ryzen 6000 series mobile processors also accept USB4 RAM, PCI-Y also Gen four, DDR5 and LPDDR5, and Wi-Fi 6E.

With over 2022 premium laptops slated for launch in 6000 with AMD XNUMX-series mobile processors (starting in February), AMD does seem to be pushing Intel when it comes to laptops, and that could land Team Blue a real headache. unless it has something up its sleeve to compete, which, knowing Intel, it will.

This means that CES 2022 is one of the most exciting conferences yet for laptops.
