7 new movies and TV shows on Netflix, Apple TV Plus, and Amazon Prime this weekend

Looking for something new to stream this weekend? First of all, be sure to check out WandaVision Episode 4 on Disney Plus – it's the best episode yet, and it finally sheds some light on what's really going on in the MCU TV show. If superheroes aren't your thing, there are always plenty of new movies and TV shows to stream this weekend. Below, we've rounded up seven highlights of the new releases for you to check out, including a movie starring Justin Timberlake as an ex-con(!) on Apple TV Plus, as well as three new Netflix Original movies appearing relatively well. harmless. We'll also explain how to stream each of them to the UK and US. Good spread.

The Search (Netflix)

The big Netflix original movie this week stars Carey Mulligan, Ralph Fiennes, and Lily James. Set shortly before World War II, it is a widow living in the British countryside who commissions an archaeologist to discover strange patterns in her territory, leading to a major find. Side note: Ralph Fiennes still looks like a man who left Britain in WWII. Critics love this movie, especially the performances of its leads. It's had 85% positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, as of this writing, so it's probably worth checking out if the subject sounds like you. Now streaming on Netflix

The Little Things (HBO Max)

Warner Bros' decision to release its slate of 2021 movies to HBO Max at the same time they hit theaters (whatever's open, anyway) is starting to pay off this week. It's a search for a serial killer, with Jared Leto playing the prime suspect, and clashes between an LAPD cop (Rami Malek) and a sheriff's deputy (Denzel Washington). The Little Things seems to fit firmly into a movie subgenre that has been affectionately dubbed "trash crime" by The Ringer's excellent movie podcast, The Big Picture: Slightly Trashy But Entertaining Crime Thrillers. Critics don't like it, though: The film has 46% positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes at the time of writing. Like most HBO Max releases this year, we unfortunately don't know how the film will release in the UK. Now streaming on HBO Max in the US.

Resident Alien (Syfy / Sky)

Resident Alien is about an alien who lives undercover as a doctor in a small town. He sounds crazy, but it feels like a crime show with a fun twist, much like iZombie, and with the always underrated Alan Tudyk of Firefly and Rogue One at the helm, it's worth checking out. Chris Sheridan, screenwriter for Family Guy, is behind the series. Episode 1 streams for free on the Syfy website and app for US subscribers, and UK viewers can stream via Sky or Now TV. The Great Escaped (Amazon Prime Video)

If you can't wait for the next undated episode of The Grand Tour Presents, which takes the hosting trio to Scotland on a pandemic road trip, consider watching this series this weekend. Mythbusters' Richard Hammond and Tory Belleci team up to survive while 'stranded' on a deserted island, using their collective knowledge of science to survive. There have been six episodes. Spoiler alert: Both of their hosts are still alive, so they had to survive. Now streaming on Amazon Prime Video

Palmero

Justin Timberlake stars in this new Apple TV Plus movie about a former soccer star who returns to his hometown after serving 12 years in prison. He soon forms a bond with a boy who is no match for the others, and begins a new relationship as he tries to get his life back on track. It sounds like a pretty familiar and goofy thing, though the critics love it, and the film has the unusual distinction of being directed by Short Circuit and Estate actor Fisher Stevens. Find 'Ohana (Netflix)

This children's movie is about two brothers from Brooklyn who travel to O'ahu for the summer with their family. In doing so, they click through to learn more about their Hawaiian lineage and find themselves on the trail of legendary treasure. If you need something for the family to watch this weekend, this sounds like perfectly enjoyable entertainment with an interesting theme for an adventure movie. Now streaming on Netflix

Penguin Bloom (Netflix)

Naomi Watts and Andrew Lincoln star in this film about a mother whose life is changed by a terrible accident. However, she slowly learns to recover with the help of a cute magpie named Penguin. She sounds quite comforting. Note, however, that Netflix has confirmed that no real penguins appeared in Penguin Bloom. Now streaming on Netflix
