7 new shows and movies coming to Netflix in July 2020
Wondering what's new on Netflix in July 2020? We'd say it's a very good month for the streaming service, if not a great one. The big release this month is season 2 of The Umbrella Academy, the highly anticipated sequel to last year's hit comic book adaptation. However, there are plenty of other highlights on Netflix this month. Below, we've captured seven of the TV shows and movies worth watching in July 2020. Read some more and decide whether or not they belong on your watch list. This list of Netflix new releases applies worldwide unless otherwise noted, and it should be noted that US Netflix subscribers will finally be able to watch ESPN's documentary series The Last Dance starting on July 17, 2020 (everyone outside the US can now see it). Here's the best of what you can stream on Netflix in July 2020.

Warrior nun

Could the title "Warrior Nun" be more vague on the show's premises? Curse. This Buffy-infused 'chosen' series is about a woman who suddenly awakens with supernatural powers and joins the Order of the Cruciform Sword, essentially a gang of warrior nuns, to defend the world. Simon Barry is the creator of it, best known for the Canadian science fiction series Continuum. Streaming on Netflix from July 2

Stateless

Statelessness is an Australian drama about four different foreigners whose lives collide in the testing environment of an immigration detention center. This drama stars Cate Blanchett and Yvonne Strahovski (Chuck, The Handmaid's Tale), and was well-reviewed when it debuted earlier this year. Netflix has the right to show it outside of its home country. Streaming on Netflix from July 8

The old guard

Even though cinemas are allowed to reopen in the US and UK from July, you may prefer to spend your time indoors. If you're looking for a great movie to air in July, consider adding this new action movie to your list. The Old Guard stars Charlize Theron as the leader of a unit of immortal warriors. In fact, they have collectively protected the world for centuries because they cannot be killed by conventional means. Now, however, with their immortal secret exposed, sinister outside forces are trying to control and exploit the abilities of this group. It's based on a graphic novel by the excellent Greg Rucka, and even if the premise seems strange, we're optimistic that it will be better than Netflix's latest comic book adaptation. It was The Last Days of American Crime, which is currently sitting on Rotten Tomatoes with a magnificent 0% positive reviews. Streaming on Netflix from July 10

Damn

Co-created by comic book legend Frank Miller (co-director of Sin City, director of The Spirit), whose output has fluctuated wildly in quality in recent years, The Damned stars Katherine Langford of 13 Reasons Why is a young girl destined to become the Lady of the Lake of Fame from Arthurian legend. If nothing else, Cursed's color palette and sword fights should pass the time until The Witcher season 2 arrives. Streaming on Netflix from July 17

Last Chance U Season 5

(Image credit: Netflix) The popular Netflix sports documentary series returns for a fifth season, this time titled Last Chance U: Laney. This time, the filmmakers focus on the soccer scene in Oakland, California, at Laney College, with the pressure on the Laney Eagles to continue the form that made them state and national champions the previous year. Tips not to be missed if jocks are your thing. Streaming on Netflix from July 28

Transformers: War for the Cybertron Trilogy

If you're an old Transformers fan who's constantly disappointed in poor live-action movies (with the exception of Bumblebee, which was pretty good), perhaps this 3D CG animated offering will help get rid of that itch. Rooster Teeth (RWBY) is producing the series, and it will be split into three parts, with the first chapter, Siege, due in July 2020. This will provide an origin story for the Transformers, if you need another. Streaming on Netflix from July 30

The Umbrella Academy season 2

(Image credit: Netflix) The quirky superhero drama returns for a second season on Netflix, this time in early '60s Texas (if you watched the season one finale, you'll have an idea why). Number Five (Aidan Gallagher) is responsible for rallying the Hargreeves brothers and sisters to face another apocalyptic threat, after each of them arrived in the '60s at a different time and place. It will undoubtedly be one of Netflix's biggest releases of the year so far. Streaming on Netflix from July 31
