2020 could be a watershed year for 5G, while Xiaomi promises ten huge phones

Get ready for more than 5G next year: the infrastructure will expand, new phones and other devices will appear ... and Xiaomi promises to release more than 10 5G-compatible phones in 2020.

According to Reuters, Lei Jun, CEO of Xiaomi Corp, made the announcement at the global internet conference to be held in China.

The decision was made after the Xiaomi Mi 9 Pro hit the Chinese market, the first of Xiaomi's 5G phones to do so. According to Lei, demand for the phone has exceeded expectations. Therefore, Xiaomi will cover all prices with 5G phones next year.

"People in the industry are concerned that next year's 4G models will not sell. It's a step they have no choice but to take," Lei said. "Therefore, we hope that operators can accelerate the expansion of their 5G base stations."

5G for everyone

Xiaomi was one of the first to offer a compatible 5G phone, with the highly capable (and relatively affordable) Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 5G. Now, he clearly sees 5G as the future.

Samsung released several 5G phones in 2019: 5G versions of the Samsung Galaxy S10, Samsung Galaxy Note 10, Samsung Galaxy Fold, and Samsung Galaxy A90 5G.

Other phone makers haven't been as enthusiastic. Google's Pixel 4 recently arrived without a 5G version, while Apple is not expected to add 5G to its iPhones before September next year.

The number of 5G phones was still going to increase next year, with or without Xiaomi's help, but the Chinese tech giant apparently wants to be in the lead.
