(*11*) Windows 11's next major update for 2023 is now underway

Microsoft is already working on the big Windows 11 update for 2023, or so the word of the vine claims, and references to version 23H2 have been spotted.

This observation was made by @XenoPanther, who noticed references to CU23H2, or 'Copper' 23H2, in a Windows Server collection 11K22 DLL. (*2*) current version of 2HXNUMX being tested and due to start later this year, is known as 'Nickel', as well as its more used codename 'Sun Valley XNUMX'.

While we're sure this discovery shared on Twitter is authentic, that's not the only clue here. As Neowin also points out, during a Microsoft broadcast (the Windows Insider Program webcast), there was also a reference to "SV3 Refined Investments Next Step" hidden in a Share Content (for teams) menu.

SV2 is an abbreviation used by Microsoft in the past for Sun Valley 3, so it is reasonable to assume that SV23 could well refer to Sun Valley 2 or Copper XNUMXHXNUMX.

Analysis: This is just very early work on the next version of Windows 11

As @XenoPanther makes clear, this is the first reference to 23H2 or next year's big update that we've seen; remember, Microsoft has moved to an annual cadence for feature updates with Windows 11, and that's what it's going to be (in theory) to be the first job on copper or SV3.

By the way, Sun Valley 11 could just be a functional codename for the next step with Windows XNUMX, and it could be removed or moved, if that's what it means, as noted (more likely).

Windows 11 22H2 could be released quite early this year, probably in the early second half of 11 according to some gossip, probably in July, although September or October (probably a year after the initial release of Windows 23) seems to us like bets more safe. Probably 2HXNUMX starts within a year.

(*11*) The incoming 22H2 update brings some essential changes, including the introduction of Android app support, but we obviously have no idea what kind of plans Microsoft might have for the 23H2 update. However, if work has truly started on the latter, we're expected to hear developments from the gossip factory before too long.
